Speaker of the Week
JOANNE SMITH introduced several speakers in support of Shirley Farlinger. JACKIE SCROGGIE mentioned the Shirley Farlinger fund. The Shirley Farlinger Peace Fund will enable young female members in the Voice of Women to attend the United Nations annual conference of the Status of Women. Information about the fund will be posted on our club website. If you would like to donate please make cheques payable to the ‘Toronto Eglinton Rotary Club Foundation’. Donation receipts will be issued for amounts of $50.00 or over. Pamela Earle read a letter from Shirley. Shirley mentioned in the letter that we should be the best Rotary club we can be and that she and Lou Cooper were the best of friends even though they were far apart politically. Pamela said that, among many other places, Shirley had gone on a Habitat for Humanity build in Nicaragua. Derek Paul talked about the U.N. status of women that Eleanor Roosevelt had founded in 1947 (an unrecognized part of history). Shirley believed that the best conference on women was in 1995 in Beijing. There has been an enormous rise in non-governmental organizations and in the women’s peace movement. It is important that government know what women are thinking. (Better still, women should be running them.) Some women who should be going to these conferences cannot and thus the Shirley Farlinger fund. Shirley will be missed for her integrity, intelligence, and friendly manner.
PRESIDENT WALTER thanked the speakers.
