ROTARY MINUTE: LARS HENRIKSSON talked
about Rotary International Foundation, a bit about its financing
and the request that Every Rotarian Every Year
give $100.00 US. (= $125.00 CAD, now). Our contributions to the
Annual Foundation Walk get credited and, in our
club, the “Birthday Money” is another RI credited
contribution. Lars reminded us that, instead of giving an amount
equal to our age, we should all give as if we were 100 years old.
Speaker
of the Week
MIKE
HAZELL introduced three young ladies, all of whom have
travelled to faraway lands on Rotary Programs.
Allie
Fonarev went to Tanzania on the Rotary Cross Cultural Exchange program.
She instructed in a day care centre for 2–5 each day. She
was also teaching teenagers study skills and English and had to
learn some Swahili to do this. Allie also became involved in cultural
activities such as tribal dancing. She also helped local artisans
to market their crafts worldwide by setting up websites for them.
Allie is a giving, caring dedicated young woman.
Brooke
Daprato went to Mongolia for 20 days - the youngest member of a
team drawn from all over Canada - to help build a Habitat for Humanity
home, They had to use broken or primitive tools, such as a bucket
with holes or a broken shovel to complete the job. While this was
not a Rotary Program, her eligibility to be part of the team that
went to Mongolia was a result of her earlier participation in Rotary
Leaders Today programs, sponsored by our club, one for training
in Arizona and one of volunteer work in India. Brooke was effusive
in superlatives about the Habitat work she did, the people she met
and the pleasure she had in being an ambassador of international
goodwill.
Hailey
Firkser talked briefly about her year in Argentina as a Rotary Exchange
Student. Her family here in Toronto housed Ruri Saga, the inbound
student from Japan last year, who was hosted by our club. Hailey
had a very successful year and will be our main speaker in a future
meeting to give us more details of her year away.
As
our program today was centred on youth, we had two special young
guests: Tahaira Stanley, who will be sponsored by our club on a
Leaders Today program, and Brent Duda, who came to learn more about
opportunities for international volunteering through Rotary.
Draw:
There was no winner this week.

Is
it just me – or do buffalo wings really taste like chicken?
