• ROBBI HOWLETT announced that this was her last meeting with our club as she and her husband are moving to St. Thomas, Ontario. All members are invited for a goodbye drink in their home between 4-6 pm on August 26. President Stephen spoke on behalf of all the members about Robbi's contribution to our club, especially as chair of the World Community Service Committee. It was noted that Jackie Scroggie has been asked to stand-in for Robbi in organizing the next meeting of the Committee. BRYAN BLENKIN has agreed to be World Community Service Chair.
• Please use the available sheets to sign up for the Presidents' Walk on September 26 in Alliston.
• A reminder about the fundraiser November 11, 2010, 6:30 pm at the York Centre. Funds are to be raised by the sale of raffle tickets, wine tasting and the sale of wine. MIRIAM ROGERS is offering volunteers a course in the appreciation of the wine being sold. Donations of prizes are needed for the raffle.

Speaker of the Week

Our speaker had no need to be introduced. RON DENHAM gave a very strong presentation of the rainwater harvesting project in the Rift Valley in Kenya that has been recommended by the World Community Service Committee to the board for $37,000 funding. The project entails individual family projects consisting of rainwater collection in eavetroughs during the rainy season which is then piped to a 9 cubic metre concrete tank. The water is drawn down during the dry season so that there is no requirement for daily 6-8 kilometre walks by the women and children to carry all the drinking, washing and irrigation water. A major result of this process is the time and energy available for children to attend school and for women to take on businesses and projects. This system has already been introduced elsewhere and proven successful. The community has a population of about 11,000 and the total cost will be over $800,000.
