Announcements:

  • Health and Welfare
KATHRYN HOPE reported that TIBOR GREGOR is slowly feeling better. He would appreciate visitors — but please phone first.

  • PRESIDENT JACKIE presided. Happy New Year from PRESIDENT JACKIE. (It’s the beginning of the year and all things are possible unless, of course, you’re a Leaf fan.)

  • JULIE WANG MORRIS presented the club with a Banner from Buenos Aires, Argentina. In her inimitable song and dance style, she mentioned that the club was made up of 120 men. (She claimed only to have accepted no more than five marriage proposals.)

  • ALEX MACFARLANE read a report about the four students we are supporting in high school in Kenya. The bottom line is that there has been some displacements but the infrastructure remains in place and there is every confidence that the four students will continue with their studies unabated.

  • MIC JORY, SHIRLEY FARLINGER, RAE COWAN and STEPHEN STEIN agreed to be on the Nominating Committee for the President of the Rotary Club of Toronto Eglinton for the Rotary year of 2009/10. (You must be a member of the club to be nominated so rumours about Pamela Sue Anderson are just that.)

  • Rotary lives on volunteers. Much thanks to the following: the ROBERTSONS (Pat and what's-his-name) for putting on such a great Christmas lunch; JOANNE SMITH for distributing all of the clothing collected at the lunch to the Out in the Cold Program; and KATHRYN HOPE for the Kettles program (94 hours and about $14,000 collected).

  • A letter from Paul Thistle at the Howard Hospital was distributed. There are tough times in Zimbabwe with inflation at 25,000 per cent but the Howard Hospital continues with its care for the community. Paul Thistle asks for your prayers.

Happy Bucks:

  • Happy Bucks from JAYNE GRESHAM, her children finally sold their house in Portland and
  • $5.00 from LARS HENRIKSSON for Matt Sundin scoring a goal. (Wonder what he would donate if the Leafs actually won … )

Speaker of the Week

Karen Barclay talked about our charity for this year’s ‘Oh My Gosh’ auction. It’s the House on the Rock in South Africa, a home for abandoned and abused AIDS orphans, many with disabilities. The auction definitely got off to an ‘Oh My Gosh” beginning as the auctioneer did not make it (Past President John McIntosh was the fill-in auctioneer). Highlights included two bottles of wine (no straws), cheese plates, candles, holiday lights, CDs and many other things (we think some still alive). If you missed the auction, never fear, the same items will be there next year. (The presents are the same and only the packaging changes to protect the guilty.) The auction proved once again that the members of our club are generous (although not particularly good shoppers). Two wonderful items - a magnificent quilt and an ivory necklace - were saved to be auctioned off this week.

Draw: There was no winner this week.
