Health
and Welfare
KAREN
COOKSEY has just gone in for breast cancer surgery.
Announcements:
- PRESIDENT
BILL
was in the Chair.
-
The day was dedicated to “Men in Skirts” or, as it
is better known, “Robbie Burns”. The Program was started
with the piping in of the haggis (frankly I think the thing is
powerful enough to move under its own power) and then the Address
to the Haggis by Dr. Doug, his very own self. Later the haggis
was distributed with a wee dram of the gold liquid to wash it
all down.
- Anyone
who contributed to the ‘Oh My Gosh Auction’ and is
looking for a receipt should see Jackie Scroggie.
-
The Rotary Club of York will be celebrating Chinese New Year on
Friday, February 19. Cost is $35.00 and it will take place at
the Diamond Banquet Hall, 3225 Highway 7 East (at Woodbine). Reception
at 6 pm, dinner at 7 pm and Karaoke somewhat later. A goodly number
of people are going from our club.
- Any
past president who is interested in becoming District Governor
can see President Bill.
-
JOHN MCINTOSH
mentioned that anyone wanting to contribute through Rotary to
Haiti should do so this week. The club decided that the Foundation
would donate $2,000 for two shelter boxes and that any donations
from club members (charity receipt provided for funds over $25.00)
would be split between shelter boxes and Doctors Without Frontiers.
Cheques should be made out to “Toronto Eglinton Rotary Foundation.”
-
The membership list has been updated. If you notice that your
entry is not quite right please see President Bill.
- KATHRYN
HOPE introduced Valerie Gerber from the Yorkminster Baptist
Church ‘Out of the Cold’ program to which we had recently
contributed $500. Valerie thanked the club and talked about the
program.
- HAPPY
BUCKS: KATHRYN HOPE
for a successful Bingo that included NORM HEIGHT,
ROBERT GOODING and youth volunteers Peter Chai
and Kelly McCleary; JAYNE GRESHAM whose youngest
son Doug was on a youth exchange; STEPHEN BIANCO
for his fundraising committee coming up with a wine tasting on
May 13 (save the date).
Speaker
of the week
DR.
DOUG introduced this week’s speaker, Ralph Turner,
who gave us his annual installment on Robbie Burns. Burns was a
prolific writer who not only wrote about love a lot but lived the
life. He was born into a farming family in 1759 (his birthplace
still exists). He had eight children with his wife and several more
with others. (If he were alive today he would be in the N.B.A.).
Burns died in 1796 at the young age of 37 and there were over 10,000
people at the funeral. Ralph read from several Robbie Burns poems
including “Ode to a Mouse” and “Tam O’Shanter.”
The meeting ended with several Scottish songs and a toast to the
Bard.
RON
WILD thanked the speaker.
50/50
Draw: KEN
NICOLLS won the weekly bottle of wine.
