Speaker of the Week

MIC JORY introduced our guest speaker, Carolyn Acker, currently Executive Director of Pathways to Education Canada. Carolyn began her career as a registered nurse and, after obtaining a Master’s degree in Organization Development, she held senior positions at St. Elizabeth Visiting Nurses. In 1992 she became Executive Director of the Regent Park Community Health Centre and a member of the Wellesley Central Hospital Board.
A vision of community succession developed at the Regent Park Centre led Carolyn to take on the challenge of developing the Pathways To Education program. This initiative is funded privately and publicly to invest in ensuring that at-risk disadvantaged youth graduate from high school and have access to post-secondary education or employment. The program’s success is outstanding. The drop-out rate in the Regent Park program lowered from 56% to 10% and post-secondary attendance rose from 20% to 80%. Carolyn shared some success stories that spoke volumes to the need for this program and the important place it has in our disadvantaged communities.

PAT ROBERTSON thanked the speaker.
