Health
and Welfare
KARIN
COOKSEY is going through a rough patch in her cancer treatments
and would love e-mails, phone calls or visits.
Announcements:
- The
Rotary Club of York will be celebrating Chinese New Year on Friday,
February 19 at the Diamond Banquet Hall, 3225 Highway 7 East (at
Woodbine). Reception at 6 pm, dinner at 7 pm and Karaoke somewhat
later. Cost is $35.00. If you want to pay in advance you can give
your money to Bob Northey.
- JOHN
MCINTOSH
is in Florida for the next couple of months so if you have any
business with the Rotary Foundation you can either see Andrew
Burton or another member of the committee.
-
It was announced that long-time member FRED DHARAMSHI
lost his mother a couple of weeks ago. That of course is most
unfortunate but it will bring him back to the club much more often
than in the recent past.
- Anyone
wanting to contribute through Rotary to Haiti should do so as
soon as possible. The club decided that the Foundation would donate
$2,000 for two shelter boxes and that the $3,000 collected from
members (charity receipt provided for funds over $25.00) would
be split between shelter boxes and Doctors Without Frontiers.
Cheques should be made out to “Toronto Eglinton Rotary Foundation.”
-
JACKIE SCROGGIE talked about the Dr. Silverman
project in Zambia. 280 mothers are taking the anti-viral drug
to try and stop transmission of HIV AIDS through nursing. It’s
early days but so far the results have been most promising.
- KATHRYN
HOPE
announced that the next Habitat for Humanity Build (inside) will
take place on May 3. If interested, see Kathryn
-
KATHRYN HOPE also announced that the Kettles
project raised $15,680, well over the goal. MIRIAM ROGERS
then talked about her experiences as a kettle person.
- HAPPY
BUCKS: PAT ROBERTSON on behalf of JAYNE GRESHAM
who is going to Antarctica for a month; WALTER WELLS
who is leaving for Serbia on behalf of CESO;
DR. DOUG for visiting Karin Cooksey and for PAT
going away for a week. (Rumour is that while Pat is away the good
doctor shall play – plans to stay up to 10:30 and eat chips
in the living room – eat your heart out, Tiger Woods.);
JULIAN MERRY as sort of a fine for being late
with his birthday cheque; Anne O’Brien (guest of Jayne Gresham)
for becoming a young grandmother.
Speaker
of the week
WALTER
PSOTKA introduced the speaker, BRENDAN ASHCROFT,
our auctioneer extraordinaire, who gave his classification talk.
Brendan is young for a Rotarian, having graduated from university
in 1999. (I don’t want to cast aspersions on the average age
of our club but 1999 for most of us represents the date of our last
colonoscopy.) Brendan is married to Jennifer and has a 7-month-old
daughter named Sloane. He started his career as a bank branch manager
in a grocery store. (This is likely better than a grocery store
manager in a bank.) From there he became an investment specialist
doing mainly retirement planning. In 2004 he came to Toronto to
work with his brother dealing with mine investment. In July 2008
he went to work with Nesbit Burns as a stockbroker which he describes
as being a behavioural counsellor. Welcome, Brendan. PRESIDENT
BILL thanked the speaker.
50/50
Draw: EVELYN
MURPHY won the weekly bottle of wine.
Quote
of the Week
"It
is not that all of us have to dedicate our life to our sport; rather
we can dedicate our sport to our life. Approaching our training
as a way of life which enhances virtually all of our endeavors we
undertake." - Dan Milman
