Announcements:
- PRESIDENT
BILL was in the chair.
-
The Rotary Club of York will be celebrating Chinese New Year on
Friday, February 19 at the Diamond Banquet Hall, 3225 Highway
7 East (at Woodbine). Reception at 6 pm, dinner at 7 pm and Karaoke
somewhat later. Cost is $35.00. Our club already has 22 people
going. If you want to pay in advance you can give your money to
Bob Northey.
- Please
keep the date of May 13 open as it will be a club
fundraiser involving drinking and buying wine.
-
April 18 is the WASRAG walk for clean water.
Hopefully we will have a goodly number of walkers since the chair
of WASRAG is our very own Ron Denham.
-
April 24 is the Trump AIDS Walk. The club is
looking for at least three more team captains.
-
JACKIE SCROGGIE talked about the Canadian Mathari
Education Foundation. This is the fourth year we have been funding
four students from the Mathari slums of Nairobi to attend residential
secondary school. All four will graduate this year and we might
be asked to do more as one or more of the students may well go
on to post-secondary schools.
-
KATHRYN HOPE announced that the next Habitat
for Humanity Build (inside and outside) will take place on May
1. If interested, see Kathryn Hope.
- HAPPY
BUCKS: SHIRLEY FARLINGER for her books of poetry; KATHRYN
HOPE for a $10,000 cheque for Habitat for Humanity which
would have been received by Neil Heathrington if he wasn’t
ill; GEORGE JATCZAK for his third granddaughter
just being born; KEITH PATTERSON for …
(I can’t read my hand writing at this point); JEFF
NOEL for dessert as it may be his last one for a while
- he leaves for Haiti in the morning.
Speaker
of the week
EVELYN
MURPHY introduced the speaker, Susan Bellan. Susan is a
mediator for both civil and commercial disputes. She said that mediation
has been around for a long time although its more formal aspects
started with a U.S. Supreme Court Justice in the mid-1980’s.
Susan mentioned that mediation is much less adversarial than the
court system and that the two sides have far more control of the
outcome. Mediation is also cheaper (a two-day trial could cost $60,000
in total) and the outcome, unlike court proceedings, is private.
Mediation works well when both sides are willing to give a bit and
both sides want to retain some sort of a relationship (especially
important in divorce proceedings). Overall, an interesting talk
with many good examples.
WARREN
MORRIS thanked the speaker.
50/50
Draw: JACKIE
SCROGGIE won the weekly bottle of wine.
