Speaker
of the Week
SHIRLEY
FARLINGER introduced our speaker, Dr. Margrit Eichler who
has several degrees including a PhD. in Sociology from Duke University.
Margrit talked about the struggle for women to get equal rights
and for Women’s Studies program to be recognized with the
university community. She began with a story of having to leave
the US when her visa ran out. She had a job with the University
of Toronto but what griped her was that her husband, as head of
the family, had to accompany her across the border. At that time
discrimination of lower pay for women was legal. A normal question
asked of women seeking employment was, “Can you type?”
Sexual harassment, rape within marriage, and violence against women
were tolerated. When a student held a female professor at gunpoint
for refusing the sexual advances of a student, the authorities refused
to call the police. When Margrit started Women's Studies there were
no text books. Students were sent out to observe certain situations
and then use the papers they wrote for the course the following
year. One professor was ridiculed for implying that women's work
in the house was real work and contributed to society.
Eventually
universities tolerated “Women's Studies” because students
flocked to the courses - which meant money for the university. Margrit
had 200 students in her first course. Scholarship need a community.
There was intellectual exclusion, intellectual harassment. They
had to start their own journals, newspapers, and conferences and
had to write their own text books. The battle for the recognition
of excellence and the war on prejudice has been exciting, exhilarating,
stimulating and rewarding.
MIKE
HAZELL offered the following comments on the above talk
without attribution: The battle of the sexes will never be won because
there is too much fraternizing with the enemy. The weaker sex is
really the stronger because the weakness of the stronger sex is
the weaker sex.
Draw
GEORGE JATCZAK was the winner of the 50/50 draw
and graciously donated it back to the club to support a project
of his choice.
