Health
and Welfare
- DR.
DOUG reported
that BILL ISBERG has been located. Bill had a
slight stroke while going through by-pass surgery and was about
to come out of St. John’s Convalescent Home. He will need
a lift to Rotary as he will not be able to drive for some time.
- Dr.
Doug also reported that KARIN COOKSEY will be
going through chemo in two weeks, followed by radiation. She is
in good spirits and would appreciate phone calls.
Announcements:
-
PRESIDENT BILL
was in the chair.
-
Please keep the date of May 13 open as it will
be a club fundraiser involving drinking and buying
wine. More details to follow.
-
Please keep August 12 open for our golf
tournament co-sponsored with Toronto Sunrise and Toronto
Parkdale.

Last week I mis-wrote myself in the Banner. I forgot to mention
that KATHRYN HOPE presented a cheque to the Ontario
Lung Association for $1,000 to help with Tulip Day. Kathryn also
wanted me to mention that the money came out of the Bingo account,
as so many club cheques do, and that it is important that we have
club members participating in the Bingo.
- KATHRYN
HOPE announced that the next Habitat for Humanity
Build (inside and outside) will take place on May
1. If interested, see Kathryn (kehope@sypatico.ca).
-
It was reported that Chinese New Year was a big success. There
were 25 from our club and 200 overall and a great time was had
by all.
- April
24 is the Trump AIDS Walk. The club is looking for at
least three more team captains. The proceeds will be split between
the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the Teresa group.
- February
was Rotary World Understanding Month and March is World Literacy
Month (so understand your Librarian and take her to lunch.)
-
A reminder to everyone that if you are bringing a guest and they
are driving, make sure that they obtain a parking coin from the
front desk. Jamming loonies into the machine is lunacy and gums
up the machine.
- HAPPY
BUCKS: LARS HENRIKSSON
told a Norwegian joke ( something about Norway beating Sweden
in cross-country skiing) and then gave a happy five bucks for
the thrill of participating in Bingo. Someone pointed out that
Canada led Sweden 11 to 7 in the Olympic medals. Lars pointed
out that Canada also led Sweden in population 39 to 9 million.
By the time all of this nonsense was over there was no more time
for Happy Bucks.
Speaker
of the week
KEITH
PATTERSON introduced the speakers, JOSEPH MARQUEZ
and Sashi Chitharanjan. Keith started out by introducing the speakers
but also pointed out that if any member wished to be a Rotary Benefactor
they could start out by seeing him. Joseph and Sashi talked about
giving and estate planning. They said that estate planning is important
as it gives peace of mind, stops family disputes, maximizes the
estate value for the beneficiaries, and minimizes taxes paid. If
there is no proper planning, half of the estate could go to the
government. Coincidentally, when asked, everyone says they would
rather have part of the estate go to charity rather than to the
government. They mentioned that in the U.S., 83% of giving is planned
through donor advisory services. In Canada the figure is much less.
Canadian tax rules provide incentives to give. Sashi finished the
speech with a number of interesting examples.
PRESIDENT
BILL thanked the speakers.
50/50
Draw: RAE
COWAN won the bottle of wine for the second week in a row.
