Announcements:

  • PRESIDENT JACKIE presided.

  • Congratulations to our newest member GORDON FLOYD who was inducted and to JAYNE GRESHAM for sponsoring him.

  • The Governor’s Cup was played at the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course (named after my cubicle at work) on August 2. Toronto Eglinton was represented by the team of SANDY, LARS, FRED AND DR. DOUG (they shot an even par 72 - you would have thought they would have played better with a Swede on the team), and BILL and Coral MARTIN, WALTER WELLS and YOURS TRULY (who tied for low mixed team at 66 - although Coral turned out to be a ringer as she is a very fine golfer). It was a great time except for one sad incident. I won’t describe some of our drives but at the 18th tee there was a protest by the SPCEW (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Earth Worms). Bottom line is that the District did an absolutely first-class job in organizing the tournament and shouldn’t have any problem filling out foursomes in 2008.

  • The following is the report from the Rotary Foundation Committee. Nurses’ Tuition - the contract for the payment of the nurses’ tuition was amended to permit payment in April 2007 and April 2008. Subsequently, payment in the amount of $2,621 was made to Dr. Thistle. Zimbabwe-Howard Hospital - it was agreed to pay $1,000 to the Whitby Rotary Club to assist in the shipping of hospital equipment and furniture to the hospital. Dignitas - we agreed to pay $1,887 Cdn., payable to RI Foundation care of Ken Dickson, Belleville Rotary Club. Tony Lee - donations totalling $2,320 in memory of Tony Lee were to be directed to the TOILS project. Ryerson Aboriginal Students - The students will be attending the meeting on September 26. Applicants are to submit submissions prior to September 12 to be approved by the Committee. Doug Philpott Inner City Children’s Tennis Foundation - it was agreed that $2,500 be donated to the Philpott program. This was delivered to Coulter Wright on July 4 when he spoke at that meeting. Brushamania - it was agreed that $1,500 be donated from the McClure Fund for Brushamania. Rotary Foundation - Canada - Monitoring Labs Stage - Polio - it was agreed that $500 be donated. Tanzanian Water Project - it was agreed to pay up to $2,699 through a District simplified grant, subject to approval of the application. Lee Sossin Pape Memorial Fund - it was agreed that $5,000 be paid from this fund for TOILS to be paid to the Rotary Club of Toronto Forest Hill. Donna Bonnick Fund - it had been previously agreed that JOHN BONNICK would determine suitable applicants to receive bursaries from the funds collected in memory of Donna Bonnick, ($6,000). After considerable research, John determined that Tiana Mohamed should receive $1,000 from the Foundation account. The balance of her tuition will be paid by another party.

  • Wilf Wilkinson will be speaking at the Terry Fox awards on November 5. Our newest Lieutenant-Governor, David Onley, will get the major award. Tickets are $100 and can be obtained from President Jackie.

  • Thanks to KATHRYN HOPE, BILL ISBERG and volunteers Marilyn Anden and Tatiana Lechtchinskaia for making the August 28 bingo such a success.

  • JOHN MACLEAN reports that this year’s Bridge will start up on September 15. Singles and couples welcome. If interested, contact JOHN at 416-987-8817.

  • A cheque presented to Afiya Chown of the Canada Mathare Education Association will help four students attend school in Nairobi.

  • A reminder of the Sunset cruise on September 27. See KATHRYN HOPE for tickets.

  • A new contest will be starting in September. If you get 100% attendance or possibly close to that for each quarter, you will be part of a draw for either Champagne or Aquavit. Make-ups and club activities such as Board meetings and Bingo count as a make-up. I think we can call this the ‘drive you to drink’ contest.

Speaker of the Week

JOHN MCINTOSH introduced this week’s speaker, Kelly Clark. Kelly is a teacher who leads the Who Is Nobody initiatives in schools. The initiative teaches at-risk children respect through interaction. Rotary, which is very active with this organization, can sponsor a school with about $400 for a Who Is Nobody kit.

JOANNE SMITH thanked the speaker.

Draw: There was no winner this week.
