Announcements:
- JACKIE
SCROGGIE was
in the Chair and reported that Pres. Bill sends his regards from
Florida.
-
JACKIE
informed members that Pat Robertson’s mother
has just passed away and that the bouquet of flowers ordered for
the death of Pat’s sister cannot be delivered. Please contact
Jayne Gresham immediately if you have suggestions
for a worthy recipient of the flowers.
-
JACKIE suggested that Stephen Bianco’s
concerns might be addressed by establishing a phone tree that
could be instituted for key speakers.
- BILL
ISBERG
gave a brief report about the TrumpAIDS Rotary Walk planned
for April 24, 2010 in Toronto. The City of Toronto today
gave authorization for this activity. Walkers will be given playing
cards at check-in stations during the walk and the cards can then
be played at the finish as a poker hand with a chance to win substantial
prizes. Ten Rotary clubs have agreed to participate. We will need
team leaders to organize walkers as well as workers to help during
the day. A skit will be performed about the TrumpAIDS Walk at
the January 6, 2010 meeting starring Bill and
Bryan Blenkin.
-
JACKIE
announced that the ‘Oh! My Gosh! Auction’
will be held on January 13, 2010 and that proceeds will
go to support the cervical cancer initiative at the Howard Hospital
in Zimbabwe.
-
BOB VERNON
reported that nine members worked last Saturday at the Habitat
for Humanity building site. There was no rain and there were no
serious injuries.
-
Next week’s meeting will be held in our usual location and
take the form of a Club Assembly.
-
STEPHEN BIANCO
expressed his disappointment that there was such a low turnout
for the Remembrance Day meeting and for our guest from the Department
of National Defence. He hoped attendance would improve for our
high profile guest speakers.
-
HAPPY BUCKS: STEPHEN BIANCO for his recent amazing
trip to Israel and to Petra in Jordan; BILL ISBERG
for hoping that a date will be set soon for his open heart surgery
planned for some time in January 2010.
Speaker
of the week
STEPHEN
BIANCO introduced STEPHEN STEELE who gave
his classification talk. Stephen is a native Torontonian who was
raised in Willowdale, attended Earl Haig S.S., and graduated from
the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Commerce and an M.B.A.
Stephen has retired from a 35-year career with the Ford Motor Company
in Canada and now runs his own financial management consulting firm.
Stephen spent most of his career at Ford in the financial department
but has had extensive experience with many facets of the company’s
operation including sales, planning, lobbying the Federal Government,
leading delegations to Asia, negotiating opposite Buzz Hargrove,
and playing a major role in the acquisition by Ford of Land Rover
and Mazda. He learned to focus on people and their needs at the
workplace to motivate and foster team spirit. In his private life,
Stephen has been actively involved in fundraising for key charities
such as the Humane Society, the Canadian Kidney Foundation, the
Toronto Zoo, and the North York Hospital. He is still actively engaged
with mentoring and coaching overseas students at the Rotman School
of Business at the University of Toronto. Stephen is married with
two children and is particularly proud to become a Rotarian since
his own father lived with the effects of polio all his life
JACKIE
SCROGGIE thanked the speaker.
50/50
Draw: MIC
JORY had the winning ticket. He didn’t draw the Ace
of Spades and won a bottle of red wine instead of the 50/50.
