The
Toronto Eglinton Rotary club was chartered on October 18, 1954,
with the approval of Rotary International, an organization that
represents about 1.2 million Rotarians in 30,000 clubs in 162 countries
around the world. John Bonnick and John MacLean are two of the original
charter members still active in our club.
Our
club has over 70 members from many different walks of life. We represent
many of the professions and businesses in uptown Toronto. Women
have been encouraged to join our club for a dozen years.
Some
of our traditions in the Toronto Eglinton Rotary Club include:-
Regular attendance at the weekly Wednesday lunch meetings is encouraged
in order to keep in touch with Rotary friends and Rotary projects.
If a member is travelling, he/she can attend any other Rotary club
and receive credit for make-up attendance. One member of our club
has more than forty years of perfect attendance.
Every
year we present the Smile Trophy (a Finnish sculpture) to the member
of our club who has served best according to the principles of Rotary
and has given the most joy to our members. When a member celebrates
the passing of another year, Happy Birthday is sung at a lunch meeting,
and he or she gives a cheque to The Rotary Foundation equal to the
number of years of age newly attained. A few months after a new
member joins the club, he or she is asked to give a classification
talk at a lunch meeting, with a brief summary of his/her life history,
vocation and connection to Rotary.
