We
believe Rotary is at its best when it leads by doing. Since our
club's inception in 1954 here are a few of the things we have done:
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Locally: |
|
| |
|
|
| |
- In
cooperation with four other clubs we built and equipped a school
for mentally challenged, the first of its kind in Toronto.
- We
provided the Salvation Army with a specially equipped van for
the physically challenged.
- We
built a pavilion and library for "Trails," a camp and
life skills training centre for inner city youth.
- In
an area of the city densely populated by immigrants from developing
countries, we provided a youth centre, a training centre for trades
and recreation facilities for the children of these newcomers
to Canada.
- We
support Canadian aboriginal students in the pursuits of their
medical studies and related health subjects.
- We
are working with Bell Mobility, Motorola, York University, and
the Toronto District School Board to provide 250 two way pagers
to profoundly deaf students and their parents. Because theses
kids only know ASL (American Sign Language) and not English they
are cut off from the world and are delayed from 4 to 8 years in
English and social skills. We hope this study will show the benefit
of deaf students being able to talk to each other and their parents
in English

|
| |
Internationally:
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
- Project
"Workshop". We equipped and provided initial training
in various trades to young people in Jamaica.
- Project
School
- In
Bolivia in a cooperation between the Ontario Police and our club
we fully equipped a school.
- In
Haiti we provided all the furnishing and equipment for a school
established by an order of nuns.
- Project
"Wahoo". We bought two fishing boats and arranged for
the training of young people in the trade of fishing on the island
of St.Kitts, thus reducing the need to import fish from other
islands.
- We
provided a mobile eye clinic for Katmandu, Nepal, a saw mill in
Dominica after its devastating hurricane and a burns ward in Bangalore.
- On
the initiative of one of our South African exchange students,
we provided and fully equipped a mobile school library in Soweto,
S.A.
- The
Dr. Bob McClure Foundation established in memory of our former
member, who was a medical missionary in China, India etc. With
the income from the foundation and following the wishes of Bob
McClure we provide annual scholarships to students in third world
countries for training in health subjects.
