Our Events
The Rotary Club of Toronto Eglinton has organized or supported many events over the years. Some current and recent initiatives include:
Transforming A Community; - Safe Water in Kenya
Last October, our Ron Denham spoke to the United Nations in New York Ron is a long-standing member of the Rotary Club of Toronto Eglinton. And, for a number of years, Ron has been General Coordinator of Rotary International's Water Resources Task Force, assisting Rotary Clubs around the world to be involved in water and sanitation projects in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Ghana and many other countries.
In March, Ron gave our guests and us a repeat of the program that he had presented to the United Nations. He spoke about the impact that clean potable water can have in changing the lives of millions around the world. Ron emphasized how the lives of women in particular are changing in many African communities. Our own club's "Rift Valley Water Project" has caught the attention of the Rotary world and Ron hopes that Water and Sanitation becomes the next focus of attention for Rotary International. The evening was a big success with over seventy Rotarians and guests in attendance.
Oh My Gosh Raffle
This fundraiser started as means for fellow Rotarians to get rid of gifts that they did not want. What came out of this event has been a fun lunch with amazing auction items that have long moved from repackaged toasters to include sporting event tickets, professional services and helicopter rides
Our Annual Raffle in January brought in $4000 and once again drew a vibrant crowd with lots of laughter and upbeat fellowship.
Golf Tournament
This annual golf tournament has happened at a variety of different courses over the years and raises funds to support both our international and local initiatives.
The day is always sunny and glorious. This endeavour is a wonderful collaboration of several Clubs, thus allowing a great deal of interaction between Members. Even if you don't golf, you should come on out to enjoy the day. The spirit is terrific.
A wine tasting, silent auction and photography sale
This event was an interesting wine tasting evening supplemented with a silent auction and talented photographic exhibit and sale. The inaugural event happened in 2011 and raised $15,000. These funds are being split between The Stop, a local community food project and Wasrag, the Rotary International clean water project.
This event focused around a wine tasting, photography exhibit and silent auction. It was geared towards Rotary Eglinton members and friends of Rotary. It raised a total of $15,000 and these funds were split between The Stop, a local community food project and Wasrag, the Rotary International clean water project.
BINGO
We added two 1AM sessions in addition to 5 or 6 regular Tuesday PM and 6 Sunday AM sessions.
The Club recognized two Student youth volunteers, Peter Chai and Kelly McCleary as "honorary" Rotarians for their unstinting service.
Trump Aids Walk
Trump Aids Walk raised $3500 (donated to The Stephen Lewis Foundation)
This was a super day, with MANY Clubs participating in the walk. There was lots of fellowship, smiles and just a super day in general. What a great way to spend the day.
Salvation Army
Salvation Army, North Toronto Community Church, "Kettles" Campaign with 8th year of Rotary leadership, raised $18,000.00 of $70,000.00 total. All funds go to the local North Toronto "Out of Cold" community programme.
Members pitched in again, as in past years to host a kettle at designated locations. Another opportunity to help the community, meet the public, talk a little about Rotary and good work we do.
Habitat for Humanity
Our Club has been a dedicated supporter of Habitat for Humanity over the years. We recently had 2 club 'build' days. This project yielded its results when we happily handed over the keys to a new home to a family on Dec. 19th, 2011.
This organization has done such amazing work but also draws the community in, to help when possible and all the while, always making it fun.
Tibor Gregor
In honour of one of our past member Tibor Gregor, the Rotary club of Eglinton worked in collaboration with the University of Toronto to create the Tibor Gregor Memorial Scholarship in Czech and Slovak studies. This $10,000 scholarship is granted yearly to a UofT student in financial need who has demonstrated a strong desire to further enhance their knowledge of Czech and Slovak studies.
Italian Dinner
The Rotary club of Eglinton yearly has an Italian dinner night in lieu of a usual meeting. Last year it was at Boccaccio restaurant and a portion of the ticket sales went to supporting our local initiatives. A beautiful dinner and environment provided Members and guests with a lovely experience.
