The Dr. Robert B. McClure Bursary Fund
The
purpose of the bursary fund is to provide financial assistance to
students from the Third World, who wish to pursue a career in the
health care field in their own countries. Students from Canada's
aboriginal peoples are also eligible.
As
a surgeon, The late Dr. McClure - a former member of the Toronto
Eglinton Rotary Club - was keenly aware of the drastic shortage
of medical professionals and support staff in Third World countries.
Throughout his life's work, Dr. Mcclure incorporated training in
the medical service he established around the world.
It
was Dr. McClure's wish that bursaries be awarded to educate nurses,
medical technologists, paramedics, physicians and surgeons. Preference
is given to students pursuing studies within the Third World, but
when it is not possible; recipients can study elsewhere, and must
return their homelands on graduation. The fund has been assisting
a Zambian student in his medical studies.
Training
of nurses in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh have also been supported
financially by the fund. Furthermore, the fund is assisting aboriginal
Canadians, who are pursuing careers in the medical field.
The
Rotary Club of Toronto Eglinton is working to establish a $1 million
endowment to provide $100,000 annually towards these goals.
