LAST PROGRAM – May 10, 2005 – (contributed by Bill Tatham)
Employment Training Services Luncheon– Winston Churchill Collegiate

During its 54 years of community service, our Club has initiated and continued many laudable activities. One such initiative is the annual ETS luncheon, originally conceived by former Rotarian Doug Holt, who now resides in Oakville. ETS (Employment Training Services) offers a vocational program for mentally challenged young people in accordance with the principles established by the Ministry of Community and Social Services of Ontario. Traditionally, ETS has trained and provided employment for such people as janitors in commercial and industrial facilities. For many years, our Club has hosted the staff and trainees of the ETS program at an annual luncheon, usually at our traditional meeting place at the Scarborough Golf Club but, in recent years, at Winston Churchill Collegiate with the splendid assistance of our energetic Interact Club.

This year, the event was repeated at Winston Churchill Collegiate. In attendance were 17 Rotarians and 2 visitors, each doing their best to entertain a lively group of 83 persons, including ETS personnel, WCC students and school staff including principal Trina Wood and Co-op teacher Dianalyn Kennedy. Club members who attended this event were rewarded with a generous selection of fresh sandwiches, vegetables, fruit and pizza, all of which could be washed down with a choice of bottled water or packaged fruit drinks. The program included music and dancing which was clearly enjoyed by the ETS trainees who crowded the dance floor and filled the air with happy laughter and chatter.

It is regrettable that so few members of our club attended this annual event which provides a unique opportunity to observe the Interact Club at work and to provide recognition to a remarkable community service organization.

In recognition of his many contributions to the Interact Club, Geoffrey Dean was presented with a resplendently red community living t-shirt by his grateful beneficiaries.

The Perfect Husband

Several men are in a locker room of a golf club. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands free speaker function and begins to talk. The other men stop to listen.

Man: “Hello”
Woman: “Honey, it’s me. Are you at the Club?”
Man: “Yes”
Woman: “I am at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only $1,000. Is it okay if I buy it?”
Man: “Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.”
Woman: “I stopped at the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2005 models. I saw one I really liked.”
Man: “How much?”
Woman: “$60,000”
Man: “Okay, but for that price I want it with all the options.”
Woman: “Great! Oh, and one more thing… The house we wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking $750,000.”
Man: “Well, then go ahead and give them an offer, but just offer $700,000.”
Woman: “Okay. I’ll see you later! I love you!”
Man: “Bye”
The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are looking at him in astonishment.

Then he asks: “Anyone know who this phone belongs to?”

Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions: (brought to you by your Vocational Service Group)

The Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called from in the Object of Rotary:

Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others and to improve the quality of life in my community.

God's E-mail

One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the unholy behavior that was going on. He decided to send an angel to Earth to check it out. So he sent an angel to Earth for a time.

When the angel returned, he told God, "Yes, it truly is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not."

God was not pleased. So He decided to E-mail the 5% that were good, because He wanted to encourage them, give them a little something to help them keep going.

Do you know what the E-mail said? Just wondering, I didn't get one either...
