LAST PROGRAM May 31, 2005
Group Forums – Fund Raising, International and Community Service

International Committee – Gene Burns
Gene wanted to tell us about some of the projects they are working on:

  1. Tsunami Relief – acted promptly and quickly got a cheque to the proper authorities;
  2. Grenada – helped with the hurricane disaster and with rebuilding a school;
  3. World Aids Project – is working diligently with the Whitby Rotary Club.

Dr. John Wiseman was very involved in the distribution of eye glasses to third world countries and Gerry Bradler has kindly taken over this important task.

Gene said that they want to get involved in a student exchange program and Geoff Dean is assisting with this. Of course, if we send students out, we must take students in, so our Club will have to provide four families to house these students for three to four months. There was an enthusiastic show of hands for volunteers. See Dale Maynes or Geoff for information.

Community Service – Susan Welcome
Susan was happy to address our group and felt that Camp Enterprise was quite a success. There were 34 students in attendance and today we welcomed Jennifer Zu and Matthew Perez, to tell us about their adventures.

Jennifer said she went to camp to learn about business practices, but enjoyed the rural setting. They played a business game and discussed leadership and people, from a fun aspect. She feels that Rotary truly gives back to the community.

Matthew thanked all of us for the weekend. He enjoyed being able to network in his fields of interest and appreciated Jim Foster’s advice about a real estate career. The seminars were informative, especially the one about customer service. Matthew said he learned a lot and is determined to become a future Rotarian!

Other Community Service projects are:

  1. Adventures in Citizenship (Dhip Roy went to Ottawa);
  2. RYLA – two students attended this in Belleville for a week;
  3. Interact lunch at Winston Churchill Collegiate;
  4. West Hill Community Services – assisted with small bus purchase;
  5. The Gatehouse – child protection services;
  6. Scarborough Women’s Shelter.

Fund Raising – Hamish Wong
Hamish feels that he belongs to the most important group, as they make the money for Gene and Susan to spend. He reported that there will not be a garage sale this year. The Trip of the 4 Seasons sold 232 tickets.

Rebecca Hunter got up to tell us about the Fall Festival. This will now be held at the West Rouge Community Centre and there will be a total new style to this event and a new name. There will be food, games, prizes and an auction. Watch your Bluffer for details.

Harry Hakomaki gave us an update on Ribfest. This will be held on the August 1st weekend and we always need lots of volunteers. See the back of your Bluffer for further details.

Chris Musselman needs your pictures and stories about our charitable causes to show the community at Ribfest where the donation dollars are going.

Attendance

On May 31st, we had 41 Rotarians in attendance and seven visitors. Barb Callery wanted us to meet Debora Lloyds and Renee Rowlands-Thomas who are teachers involved in our Camp Enterprise, as well as Matthew Perez and Jennifer Zu, who are students who can’t wait to tell us about their experiences there. Kim Nilsson was delighted to introduce Hailey Bieles, from The Mirror, who has been giving us some good press coverage lately. Chris Musselman welcomed back Sandra Cooksey and Brian Philcox reminded us that our frequent visitor, Jeff Mittman, was back again!

Announcements

***SAY CHEESE*** CLUB PHOTO – JUNE 14 – NEW DATE!! As it is our Rotary Centennial year, we will have a group picture taken at 1:45 p.m. on June 14. A photographer has been hired and this will be taken outside the Scarboro Golf & Country Club.

Kim Nilsson from the Membership Committee is putting together a booklet for new members. She will require a one page blurb from each committee to describe what their function is and what projects they are involved in. This will really assist the new members and help them discover how they can get involved.

Mike Cooksey showed off his new 2005 Ribfest Sponsor Kit and let us know that the Royal Bank has now donated $1,000. He is also very thankful to The Mirror for their articles and for being a major sponsor.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall was up to the task again and the wheel went round and round until it hit #33. Even though he should be disqualified, President Bruce won again, but did not win the big pot. Even so, “just spinning is winning.”

Sergeant-at-Arms – Pat Agnew

Rookie Pat Agnew has a new profession, and showed us that she was up for the job. Immediately, she stated her rules; no fines, lots of true confessions and happy bucks.

Barb Callery donated on the spot, as she won the big 50/50 pot a few weeks ago.

Skip Sears confessed about his hidden, ringing cell phone.

Jim Foster paid because he cannot come to a meeting at Pat’s house, due to family obligations.

John Woods was reminded about his wedding anniversary, shouted out “good lord” and threw money in the 50/50 chip bucket.

Chris Musselman, representing the Inner Wheel, thanked our Club for sponsoring their conference in September.

Brian Philcox wanted to thank all of us for the warm reception Bonnie received last week.

Jeff Mittman enjoyed talking with Skip on his cell, and paid up. He is also relieved that although his son broke his arm, but is now well on the way to recovery.

John Agnew is sure that his first wedding anniversary to Pat is worth $5.

Judy Lewthwaite has no trouble remembering her birthday, as her husband, George, celebrates on the same day!

Susan Welcome still cannot find her pin after moving.

Hamish Wong said something about his son putting in a pool in his backyard.

President Bruce told us about a very good write-up in the Washington Post about Bonnie Buxton.
