LAST PROGRAM June 7, 2005
Colleen Spilar – Home Instead – Senior Care at Home

Brian Philcox introduced Colleen Spilar and her associate, Janice Smith, from “Home Instead” and pointed out the brochures on the tables. He explained that Colleen is new to this field and has a background in marketing. She is married with three sons and does aqua fitness ten times per week with senior citizens.

Colleen took the stand and thanked everyone for letting her address our group today. She is here to explain about non medical home care.

Home Instead was started in 1974 and provides light housekeeping, companionship and assistance with attending outside events such as medical appointments or visiting friends. This service reduces the feelings of isolation and despair. The caregivers are rigidly screened and bonded, then given extensive orientation and training. They are carefully schooled in making meals fun, safety and being aware of elderly medical conditions.

They can provide care from three hours to 24 hour care. Home Instead prides itself on matching the appropriate caregiver to the client and focuses on what person can do (not can’t do). One of things they take into consideration is language differences and preparing ethnic foods. They have personal support workers who are capable of lifting heavy clients.

Colleen then showed us an interesting video. It explained how seniors can live with independence at home and be provided with a comprehensive array of non medical services. One of the most important things is providing companionship. Home Instead always maintains contact with other family members and frequently checks up on their clients.

Colleen then told us a true story about one of their clients. Mr. Smith (pseudonym) lost his wife in December 2004 and his health declined. His daughter brought in Home Instead and the caregiver noticed that a lot of Christmas cards still had Mr. & Mrs. Smith on them. The caregiver wrote a letter to reply to all the senders explaining the situation. Another thing, Mr. Smith is now playing the piano after 11 years!

Home Instead is a member of the Ontario Health Care Association and is registered with Veteran Affairs. The difference between this and government services (CCAC) is that it is more personal, compatible and interactive. Private insurance coverage might pay for some of the service and this is covered when inquiring about care. A thorough in-take evaluation is always completed for new clients. The costs vary between $17 - $20 per hour.

Kim Nilsson graciously thanked our guests for their informative and interesting talk.

Attendance

On June 7th, we had 29 Rotarians in attendance and nine visitors. Ron Marsh welcomed back Elaine Vollett, who we are looking forward to being our speaker on July 5th. Bert Geary had a big job ahead of him. He introduced John Grace of the Barbados Rotary Club, who had brought along Kathleen Grace, Wendy McCarthy, Michael McCarthy and Kathleen McCarthy. Chris Musselman was delighted introduce John Hemmant, past District Governor, and a current member of the Toronto Don Mills Rotary Club.

Announcements

Rebecca Hunter brought our attention to the insert in today’s Bluffer. This two part form asks us to indicate which committee(s) we are interested in and asks for our thoughts about priorities for the upcoming year. Please fill this out and return to Rebecca or another board member as soon as possible.

Norm Rhora had two announcements. The first one is about Ribfest. We will be distributing flyers that will enable businesses to have coupons that advertise their companies. These flyers will be widely distributed to approximately 50,000 people at Ribfest and it is only $300 for a good space. Let Norm know about interested business associates.

Norm also told us about Bendale Acres, where Donna Worden, Victor Shastri and Norm volunteer. They have opened a new Bistro Coffee house which is open from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Norm invited all of us to a card party there on June 8th.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall was a bit shaky after finding someone different sitting in Gary MacGregor’s seat, although the surprise was quite pleasant according to him. He managed to spin the wheel, shouted out #25, and our guest, Elaine Vollett thought she had won a lot of money. However, she failed to ace it and ended up with only a twoonie. (p.s.- the surprise seating companion was none other than yours truly….ed!)

Other News

CLUB SERVICE APPEAL: Let us know news about fellow Rotarians and their families. That way we can send flowers, cards, etc. to let them know we care. Call Audrey, Judy or Sheila.

Club Membership Dues – These are now due and should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Scarborough then remitted to Don Hall. The price is the same as last year.

Eye Glasses – give your used eye glasses to Gerry Bradler. These will “open the world” to needy people.

Sergeant-at-Arms – Millie Tavener

Millie was going to take a kind, gentle approach to us today, as there are so few of us here, due to the annual golf tournament.

However, she was not going to let Don Hall get away with his off-hand reference to Sheila Zornada, describing his state of mind being instigated by sitting beside “that.”

Brian Philcox was next in the line of fire for interfering with Millie’s job, in other words, supplying Susan Welcome with a Rotary pin, so Susan would not get fined.

Audrey McCaskill is very proud of her granddaughter, Julia, who swam against 275 kids and came in 13th!!! Julia’s team then came in 4th in Canada. (Way to go and a chip off the old block….ed.)

Shelley Lush was fined for having beautiful legs, although he doth protested and claimed Millie has great legs too.

John Hemmant was very proud to announce that he has been in Rotary for 50 years today and had started off by being a member of our Club! (big round of applause)

Gerry Bradler is happy to celebrate his wedding anniversary, although he didn’t seem sure which one.

Aysan Sev’er let us know that she was the keynote speaker recently in London and enjoyed the experience.

Susan Welcome has learned a valuable lesson – do not share news with the S.A.A. before lunch.

Hamish Wong was reminded about something, was told about it, but still wasn’t sure, anyways, it is his club anniversary.

Elaine Vollett paid a happy buck as her son recently had a growth removed and it was benign.
