Doug Gray – Classification Talk

Hamish Wong wanted us to meet a person who truly epitomizes “service before self,” in other words, Doug Gray, who Hamish met at the Masons and Shriners. He had previously met Doug and Colleen at their daughter’s pool party, over 20 years ago, where he enjoyed lots of fruit pies. When Colleen saw Hamish at a Mason event, she recognized him and that’s how Doug learned about Rotary.

Doug Gray took the stand and thanked Hamish, saying he was proud to be a Rotarian. He would like to share the who, what, why and where’s about his life.

First, he told us about his interesting family. He has a brother named Don who is 11 months older than Doug. His father was born in 1916 and was a spitfire pilot in the war. Both of Doug’s grandfathers are from Scotland. His paternal grandmother is from the Gibb family, which have been in Canada since 1828, making Doug the sixth generation Canadian. He has a son named Daniel and his daughter is Lori Maracle, who he follows in joining Rotary and becoming a mortgage broker.

When his children were aged 5 and 7, he was a single father. He married Colleen Reesor on July 4, 1981 and Doug paid a very special tribute to her. All of us were grateful for the wonderful pies which were made by her from fruit in their backyard.

Some of things that Doug gets up to are: Mason, Shriner, blood donor volunteer, world traveler, gardener, photography and historian. He is a member of the Scarborough Historical Society and is proud that his wife’s family settled in this area in 1804. He is also involved in the Scarborough Horticultural Society and his home and gardens are highlighted in tours of the area.

Doug told us that he cares adamantly about the blood donor services and we will have a special speaker at our Club on August 2nd to share his experiences and ask us to volunteer. He is proud of his involvement in the Masons and Shriners, explaining that their values fulfill his spiritual needs with their system of brotherly love and truth.

Colleen and Doug are extensive travelers and have just returned from a Mediterranean cruise with side trips to Spain and France. They have also enjoyed a Panamanian cruise and a trip to Hong Kong, as well as to most of the Caribbean countries. They like to pick a different destination each year.

Doug then told us about his career as a mortgage broker. He is certified in Fraud Protection and Ethical Standards. He is thorough in his work as he could be sued if he doesn’t provide the correct advice to his clients. His company can assist with high-interest debt as well.
He is committed to maintaining quality relationships that give repeat business and provide referrals. It is important to note that his mortgage advice and recommendations are free to the borrower, as his fee is paid by the lending institution. Doug is happy to be in the same business as his daughter, as they enjoy helping each other.

Doug is confident about his success, so he bought the building where his office is located at 2588 Danforth Avenue, near Main Street.

Doug is also very involved in his charitable pursuits and believes in karma, “what goes around, comes around.” He believes that one person can truly make a difference and only that person can control himself. Truthful actions will lead to success, even though there are always obstacles to overcome. You should never blame others or understate your own potential.

He also shared with us that it is important to spend time each day alone, reflecting on events around us and questioning your inner self. Doug firmly believes in pursuing continuing education, reading self improvement books and encouraging a daily advancement in knowledge.

Lastly, Doug hopes to become a good Rotarian and is very happy to be a member of our Club.

Attendance

On June 14th, we had 43 Rotarians in attendance and six visitors. Chris Musselman was very charmed by our exotic guest from the South Pacific, Jacques Purset, who is the President of a Rotary Club in New Caledonia which is located in the South Pacific. He presented a banner made of bull’s skin and explained the various meanings etched into this flag. Jacques also mentioned that the wood pole has medicinal qualities.

Derek Tarlton had a big job by presenting the many generations of Doug Gray’s family. There was his mother (Doris Gray), wife (Colleen Reesor), daughter (Lori Maracle) and grandson, Steven.

Skip Sears surprised us by outing Jeff Mittman who was trying to hide. Norm Rhora presented Brad Warren from Bally Fitness, who is a generous Ribfest sponsor and is helping us with prizes.

Announcements

President Bruce extended his appreciation to Audrey McCaskill for organizing the President’s Ball last Friday. He especially enjoyed the ritual beer chugging.

On Friday, July 1st, there will be a parade starting after 8:00 a.m. from the Salvation Army Citadel on Morrish Road.

Rebecca Hunter reminded us about the two part form which asks us to indicate which committee(s) we are interested in and asks for our thoughts about priorities for the upcoming year. Please fill this out and return to Rebecca or another board member as soon as possible.

Harry Hakomaki is starting to get us excited about Ribfest, which is only six weeks from now! He reminded us to go on-line and sign up as volunteers and that Mike Cooksey has plenty of sponsorship forms.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall spun the wheel extra hard today to send us a nice breeze on a hot day and it landed on lucky #7. However, Bob Johnston got the meanie queenie and ended up with a twoonie.

Other News

Club Membership Dues – These are now due and should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Scarborough then remitted to Don Hall. The price is the same as last year.

Eye Glasses – give your used eye glasses to Gerry Bradler. These will “open the world” to needy people.

Sergeant-at-Arms – Skip Sears

Skip was glad to have the floor and announced that he enjoyed himself at the President’s Ball and the dinner was excellent. He then went to say that all the people that did not attend should contribute $1.

Ron Marsh likes to go on and on, but your editor was distracted and not listening.

There were lots of Happy Birthday bucks: Norm Rhora, Susan Welcome, Jai Persaud.

Donna Worden also had birthday bucks and was happy about something else, but her voice trailed in the wind.

Bob Johnston is a guy on the move, and is sad about the last drive home and last night in his house.

Hamish Wong wished us “Happy Father’s Day” to all the appropriate parties.

Ode to Bruce Pettit and the Presidential Ball (contributed by Sheila Zornada)

This is the story about a President named Bruce,
Who stood and declared we’re going to have a truce.
Everybody get ready and come to a great dinner,
Tonight’s the night that’s going to be a winner!

First we sang, then listened to Gene say his grace,
With a special toast to all the women in the place.
The women liked that and cheered and laughed.
It was a great time to fill up the glass!

Along came the meal and it was the best,
A bit of discussion was shared by the rest.
Then Bruce got up and shared his belief,
It’s been a long year and its time for relief.

Up to the stand pretty Rebecca stood tall,
She welcomed us to work together one and all.
Mike encouraged us to remember the four way test,
And remember past President’s who have done their best.

The names were called out from a mighty big list,
And we paid tribute to the leaders that we miss.
For the ones that were there, we clapped and smiled,
All the time reminiscing for a little while.

The meal was over and we started to dance,
My how those Rotarians can jump and prance!
The wine could have encouraged a few new steps,
The President’s Ball was quite a success!

Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions:
(brought to you by your Vocational Service Group)

The Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called from in the Object of Rotary:

Be faithful to the letter and to the spirit of the ethical codes of my vocation, to the laws of my country and to the moral standards of my community.

At this meeting on June 29th, President Gail will be handing over the reins to incoming President Kathy Tarlton and we will make some plans for next year. Please call Beverley a week before the 29th.
