Janet Handy – The Gatehouse – Child Protection

Norm Rhora was pleased to introduce Janet Handy who is the Executive Director of The Gatehouse and has been in this position for 3-1/2 years. She was a professor at Ryerson, teaching early childhood education. Janet is also an artist and enjoys working with wood.

Janet pointed out Michael Poluwooda and Lijeanne Lee who are helping to campaign for a Gatehouse setting in the Scarborough area.

The Gatehouse is a very unique place and was renovated by 400 volunteers. This reduced the overall cost from $300,000 to only $30,000. This building, which is located on Lakeshore Boulevard West, was originally built in the 1890’s and they worked closely with the Historical Society to maintain its architectural charm.

Janet reminded us about the sad story of Randle Dooley who was murdered by extreme child abuse. This media attention made an 82 year old man remember his own horrible experiences and The Gatehouse provides programs to help adults deal with their own traumatic past.

She then told us a story about a policeman who brought a small child who was afraid to The Gatehouse and when that child saw all the teddy bears on the staircase, the child started to relax. The environment helps children disclose details in a comfortable setting.

Unfortunately, one in four children will suffer abuse by their 16th birthday. It is important to have a safe, neutral, non intimidating place where victims and their families can receive support. The Gatehouse creates a unique environment offering police services, child welfare and treatment professionals the opportunity to respond in a safe place.

We viewed some pictures of The Gatehouse and saw the beautiful staircase with all the stuffed animals, which leads to an interview room. No one wears uniforms. Other rooms are available for family members and professionals to respond with support and consultation referral. The investigation in this setting reduces the likelihood of inhibition, helps family members to relax and assists the investigators with their work.

We then saw a picture of the interview room, which has state of the art recording equipment, so that the child does not have to re-say everything. This ensures that the court sees the developmental stage of the victim disclosing evidence.

The Gatehouse has received many recognitions and community service awards. The Ministry of the Attorney General awarded this place as “Best Practice Site for Victim Services.” Janet explained that they have planted a special garden for Farrah Khan, who was killed while The Gatehouse was being developed.

They conducted 220 interviews in 2004, including both child and family. It has provided a safe place for 4,000 children, youths, adults and supporting family members since 1998. The cost of child abuse has reached $16 billion in related issues. Approximately 90% of the GTA’s police divisions have used The Gatehouse facilities.

With that information, Janet explained a need for a similar project in the Scarborough area, which has grown by 6.1% from 1996 to 2001 and comprises 24% of Toronto’s population. Police Divisions 41 and 42 are the busiest in the area.

They have formed a steering committee and started the “Purple Door Campaign,” which is the colour of The Gatehouse door. The mission is to find a suitable site in Scarborough and raise $1.5M over the next five years. The cost per year to maintain this type of facility is $300,000.

Lina Demerjian was very pleased to thank Janet Handy for an interesting and informative presentation.

Attendance

On June 21st, we had 32 Rotarians in attendance and nine visitors. Skip Sears wanted us to meet his special lady friend, Ann Sears, his wife. Harry Hakomaki welcomed back our frequent visitor, Jeff Mittman. Jim Foster was delighted with his three important guests: Jennifer Williams, a Rotary exchange student who is going to Belgium and her mother, Cynthia Williams, as well as Sherri Auger from the Willowdale club.

Eileen Smith was pleased to introduce Michael Poluwooda and Lijeanne Lee from The Gatehouse Services.

President Bruce welcomed back Rod Freeman.

Announcements

President Bruce told us about the Canada Day Parade on Friday, July 1st. We will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel on Morrish Road and the parade starts at 11:00 a.m.

Bruce also had an e-mail from Rebecca Hunter, who is attending the Rotary International Annual Conference. She reports that all is well in the windy city, they are having a great time and will make sure our treasured items are included in the time capsule.

Barb Callery brought our attention to the Ribfest Volunteer Form which is enclosed with today’s Bluffer. She has 250 shifts to cover and desperately needs our help. Volunteer today and get all your friends and family involved too!

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall told us about the total sum of $375 and then spun the wheel to #15. It seemed like no one had this number until Case Bastmeyer woke up, jingled his pockets, out came the lucky number, and he won again!!

Other News

Club Membership Dues – These are now due and should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Scarborough then remitted to Don Hall. The price is the same as last year.

Eye Glasses – give your used eye glasses to Gerry Bradler. These will “open the world” to needy people.

Sergeant-at-Arms – Ben Wentzell

Ben started off by saying all the “tight wads” should stand up, but then realized that would include all of us.

Ron Marsh can hardly wait to talk to all the people at Ribfest this year.

Victor Shastri got caught in the pin patrol and paid a fine.

Skip Sears was happy, but also had a complaint. He will be away for this birthday two weeks from now and was surprised to see Shelly Lush sitting with his wife. Shelly then moved on to some other lovely ladies.

Jeff Mittman and Gene Burns both had important things to say, but your editor missed it.

Jim Foster also likes beautiful women and was delighted with his table companions.

Rod Freeman is glad to have made the trek our way and paid a fine just for being here.

Case Bastmeyer claimed to have been reading The Bluffer and almost missed his lucky big win.

Barb Callery paid a late fine, while Eileen Smith paid for being late too and not having her pin.

Bob Johnston had to pay for making his wife homeless.

Inner Wheel News

Our final meeting of the year will be a barbecue at the home of Beverley Baxter-Dennis. We understand that Sydney is cooking so that will be a real treat. We have had a terrific response to our conference on September 30th at the Bank of Montreal Institute for Learning. Thanks to all who have supported us in this endeavour. At this meeting on June 29th, President Gail will be handing over the reins to incoming President Kathy Tarlton and we will make some plans for next year. Please call Beverley a week before the 29th. She would appreciate a few salads.

Garage Sales

IT WAS a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Georgia. After an early dinner, I asked my uncle if he would like to go for a walk and look at a few garage sales down the street. He said a walk would be fine, but that he didn't much care for garage sales. I asked why not, and he answered, "Because if they don't want it, I don't want it either!"
