LAST PROGRAM June 28, 2005
President Bruce – Presidential Address
Rebecca Hunter – Inaugural Speech

Due to everyone’s busy schedules, we decided to end and begin the two Presidents on the same day. First up to the stand was President Bruce.

He declared that during the year he was often amazed and perplexed, but decided to concentrate on the “good stuff.” Bruce is sad to be separated from Gary MacGregor and is upset that Gary couldn’t make it today, for the last sitting side by side. Then Bruce told us about our successes during the year.

A few years ago, our Club raised money mostly from the fall festival and trip of the month tickets, but now with the introduction of Ribfest, we are raising more significant funds for our community and international projects. Bruce thanked Harry Hakomaki for his contributions to Ribfest and congratulated him on successfully running this event for two years.

Bruce updated us on the various committees and their achievements. He pointed out Susan Welcome and Aysan Sev’er from Community Service, and remarked about the women’s shelter and the revival of the Roy Hibben Fund. He reminded us about students in PACT, interact and Camp Enterprise and their successes, as well as the Feed The Children fund.

Gene Burns and Victor Shastri from the International Committee were also remarkable with their involvement in the Tsunami disaster, AIDS and the ambulance for Mexico.

Brian Philcox and Eileen Smith from Membership met their criteria and welcomed many new members to our Club, including Anne Taylor.

Judy Lewthwaite, Audrey McCaskill and Sheila Zornada were thanked for their club service activities such as the car rally, which Donna Worden did an excellent job on, and the various parties and functions during the year. Bruce appreciated Audrey’s work with the cakes and hams at Christmas and said nice things about Sheila’s work on The Bluffer and program.

Bruce then took a moment to remember Dr. John Wiseman and Bill Kastris, who we miss.

He is also glad that the final paperwork for our own Club Foundation is completed and he thanked John Agnew and his committee for their tireless involvement.

Lastly, he paid a special tribute to Gary MacGregor and Don Hall, who were always there for him and who he felt he could call at any time.

In closing, Bruce offered all of us a heartfelt thank you. He believes that we are well on our way with fund raising and we can do great things here and internationally. He asked us to step back, do not look at the tree, but look at the forest. Then Bruce quoted his father-in-law, “Be wise – do it my way.” Bruce then gave the stand to Rebecca, after a long round of applause.

Rebecca Hunter poised herself at the stand and gave a hearty thanks to all her friends and family for their support. She is honoured to be the 55th President of the Scarborough Rotary Club.

Rebecca reflected on when she came to our Club ten years ago to watch her husband, Kim, be inducted as a Rotarian. Now he is sitting at the same table, watching her become our President!

Since she has just got back from the International Conference in Chicago, Rebecca is very inspired by the messages that she received there, especially from Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammer, the new President of Rotary International. He believes in getting back to basics, especially since this is also our 100th Centennial Year. The four way test and our motto, “Service Above Self,” are paramount in aiding the fight for literacy, water, hunger and health. She knows that we all can find projects in all those areas.

Rebecca commented on the fun and fellowship of Rotary and the importance of our presence in this community. She reminded us that our new District Governor, Joan Hayward, will be addressing our Club on July 12th. Then she took some time to make special mentions about the new year.

She pointed out Case Bastmeyer who will be reviving the Vocational Services Group and thanked him for taking on this challenging project. She is also grateful to the team of Pat and John Agnew, our new SAA’s for the coming year. Then she thanked all the directors and chair people who will be leading the various committees during her tenure as President. Rebecca reminded us that despite the separate groups and committees, we are all members of the Rotary Club of Scarborough and she is really looking forward to working closely with all of us and having another successful year.

Then a presentation was made to Charles Bruce Pettit where he received a plaque and a special pin. Jake Hunter presented his mother with a lovely bouquet of flowers, amid standing ovations and heartfelt congratulations.

Attendance

On June 28st, we had 32 Rotarians in attendance and fourteen visitors. Mike Cooksey welcomed back his charming wife and friend to all, Sandra. Ron Marsh wanted us to meet his neighbour, Paul Ambrose. Hamish Wong reminded us about our frequent visitor, Jeff Mittman, and in turn, Jeff introduced Elaine Vollett, both from the Markham Sunrise Rotary Club.

Our big, central visitor table was introduced by Kim Hunter, from the Toronto Club. He pointed out a budding Rotarian, Jake Hunter and family friend, Lorraine Matthews. The other supportive guests from the Toronto Rotary Club were Linda Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Donald Wright, Michele Guy and Geoffrey Johnson, their President.

Sydney Baxter-Dennis was pleased to see Lars Hendriksson, our District Governor for District 7070, and Dexter Gonsalves from the Scarborough Bluffs Rotary Club.

Annual International Conference

There were some general comments about the conference and all in all, it seems a good time was had by everyone. Jake Hunter, Chris Musselman and Mike Cooksey presented flags they had received while in Chicago. Brian Philcox got a wonderful Sergeant at Arms Hat and graciously donated it to our Club, for all future SAA’s to wear!

Audrey McCaskill enjoyed herself immensely, had her bags packed and carried by Rotarians, but failed the 4-Way Test while crossing the border on the way home.

Chris Musselman had a book all about the 2005 Conference with everyone’s names in it who attended. She has graciously donated this to our archives.

Announcements

President Bruce wanted us to know that it is Bert Geary’s birthday on July 1st and he will be 91 years old. Bruce’s gift to Bert is free lunches for the rest of his term! Then we all burst into song and cheered.

Bruce also pointed out if you missed the Club photo shoot, you can still get this done at Photo Express, 105 Guildwood Parkway. Call 416-281-3014 to arrange an appointment before July 16th.

Harry Hakomaki reminded all of us about volunteering for Ribfest. There is a sign-up sheet enclosed in the Bluffer or you can go on-line at www.scarboroughribfest.com. Volunteer today, avoid a call from Harry tomorrow!

Norm Rhora told us about Summerfest at Bendale Acres, which is aimed at raising money for this facility. There will be a barbeque, white elephant and 50/50 draw. This will not conflict with Ribfest and he will give more details soon.

District Governor – Lars Hendriksson

Our out going District Governor said he feels like a politician leaving office, but would like to honour those who made it a successful year. He told us that there were 250 people from our district at the conference in Chicago and our ambulance that was in the parade will now be donated to Mexico.

All the Presidents of the Clubs in the District have the opportunity to vote for each other with the intention of nominating someone for a Presidential Citation. In this regard, Lars was honoured to present to President Bruce a special certificate and hearty congratulations on his great leadership.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall sadly told us there is not money in the pot after Case Bastmeyer had his mighty big win last week. However, we were still hopeful and happy when Sandra Cooksey won with #3. However, she will wait until the pot gets bigger.

Other News

Club Membership Dues – These are now due and should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Scarborough then remitted to Don Hall. The price is the same as last year.

Eye Glasses – give your used eye glasses to Gerry Bradler. These will “open the world” to needy people.

Sergeant-at-Arms – Audrey McCaskill

Audrey looked absolutely thrilled when she got to be the first person to wear the new SAA hat.

She immediately told Don Hall to pay some money for his club anniversary or don’t carry the box around.

Chris Musselman paid because Chicago was great and she is grateful for the kind words coming her way.

Bob Johnston and Dave Johnston paid because they attended a Magna Convention and enjoyed it. Dave’s son is also graduating from grade 8.

Brian Philcox paid for Bonnie’s birthday.

Kim Nilsson paid for both her birthday and forgetting her pin.

Kim Hunter paid for Jake’s birthday last weekend.

Case Bastmeyer was a poor man, despite his big win last week and had to write a cheque for his lunch. Then he decided to donate $20 in happy bucks and asked Don for a loan. Don cashed his winning cheque, minus the $20!

Hamish Wong paid a proud, happy buck as his grandson, Adam, received all straight “A’s” and was named top student in his school!

Anne Taylor wanted us to know that she was happy that Shelly bought everyone a drink at their table to celebrate Bert Geary’s birthday.

Bert Geary did remember it was his birthday due to singing and drinking, and paid a happy buck.

Doug Gray remembered it was his wedding anniversary to Colleen.
