LAST PROGRAM – July 12, 2005 – Joan Hayward

Rebecca Hunter was very pleased to have Joan Hayward, our new District Governor, address our group today. Dexter Gonzalves, Assistant District Governor, stood up to introduce Joan.

First, Dexter wanted us all to know that Joan Hayward is the first female District Governor in our district. Joan and her two brothers grew up in northern Toronto. She obtained a degree in French and English from the University of Toronto, and in 1968 began teaching. Eventually she became the Vice Principal of a school.

Joan married Roger Hayward in 1969 and after some years, decided to move to Alliston, where they really enjoy living. In 1990, she joined the Rotary Club where Roger was a member. She has enjoyed a very impressive tenure with Rotary International, attending many conferences and Rotary events.

In her spare time, Joan enjoys reading, swimming, sewing and shopping.

Joan Hayward came to the stand and promptly paid two happy bucks, one for being pleased with the short board meeting that took place with our directors before the luncheon meeting; and also for being happy that her son, Steven, is coming home from Guatemala where he has been involved in Habitat for Humanity.

She then began by saying that she was honoured to address us and indebted to the leadership of the District Governors before her. She reminded us that Rotary was planted in firm soil 100 years ago by Paul Harris and three colleagues and has found fertile soil in order to continue to grow internationally, with so many committed members.

Some of the aspects of Rotary that she is committed to are:

  1. Membership – recruit new prospects and retain current members.
  2. Service Opportunities – need projects that meet the requirements of the local community and international service.
  3. Rotary Foundation – this includes the ambassadorial scholarships and polio eradication.
  4. Youth Programs – RYLA, Interact, Rotoract, Camp Enterprise – these young people are our future and we should keep track of alumnae.

Joan strongly emphasized that the District Committees will support and guide our Club if needed. The first edition of the District Governor’s newsletter will be here after July 15.
District Governor Joan Hayward concluded by reminding us about the Foundation Walk on September 11th in Richmond Hill and the District Conference at the Nottawasaga Valley on October 15th. She wants us all to get hooked on Rotary programs and at the same time, enjoy fun and fellowship! “Let’s Soar into Service.”

Attendance

On July 12th, we had 40 Rotarians in attendance and five visitors. Hamish Wong was very pleased to introduce Wanda Robinson. Wanda is helping the Fund Raising Committee organize a dinner/dance in November which will help our Club raise funds for a worthwhile project to raise funds to benefit a Scarboro hospital. Chris Musselman reminded us that Elaine Vollett, our speaker from last week, is back again and would like to join our Club! Brian Philcox gave a warm welcome to Dale Sampson, who is also interested in joining our Club.

Announcements

President Rebecca started off by scheduling a board meeting after next Tuesday’s (July 19) club luncheon.

Bruce Pettit now has the colourful posters for Ribfest, so let him know how many you can put up around our community.

Barb Callery reminded all of us about filling out a VOLUNTEER SHEET for Ribfest and make sure you recruit your family and friends too!

Gerry Bradler presented President Rebecca with a beautiful display of new Rotary flags, to start her year off just right!

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall still does not think the pot has reached a sizeable amount, but that did not dampen the hopes of many. Elaine Vollett won with #21, but our frequent guest will come again to win some more.

Other News

Club Membership Dues – These are now due and should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Scarborough then remitted to Don Hall. The price is the same as last year.

Eye Glasses – give your used eye glasses to Gerry Bradler. These will “open the world” to needy people.

Let Judy, Audrey or Sheila know if any Rotarian or their families are ill, so we can send the appropriate gift/card to them, on behalf of the Scarborough Rotary Club.

Sergeant-at-Arms – Brian Philcox

Brian declared that he is not sure he can cope without the new SAA hat, but will blunder through nonetheless. He started off by asking us to be on the honour system and pay for tardiness and pinlessness. (new word by ed.)

First to confess was Susan Welcome.

Next up was Case Bastmeyer, who was late, but was rebuffed about his shirt, which is the only one he owns. Case heartily defended himself, by declaring Brian should have no opinion, considering his own taste in shirts, namely Rotary wheels revolving around Rotarian Brian’s armpits.

Ben Wentzell jumped on the bandwagon and thinks SAA’s should set an example with the dress code, and perhaps tuck in the offending shirt, but leave out the Rotary wheel on one side.

Ron Marsh showed us a golf ball from a game played by a 100 year old man.

Millie Tavener is very proud to have completed a 20 km walkathon for leukemia research and will be repeating this performance in September for the same cause.

Eileen Smith paid a happy buck and thanked us for the flowers she received after her recent surgery.

Barb Callery is also happy about her birthday and the wonderful vacation she just had.

Chris Musselman kindly pointed out Bruce Pettit and all his efforts on behalf of Ribfest. Thanks Bruce!

Donna Worden is glad her second son is moving to a new house.

Bruce Pettit told us he is glad to be back amongst the ranks, there is less bread to choose from, and he misses Gary.

Sydney Baxter-Dennis paid $5 while solemnly telling us about his wedding anniversary.

Norm Rhora was very pleased to tell us that the Probus Club membership is now 175 strong, with a waiting list!

Mike Cooksey was fined for promoting a large financial institution with shiny keychains.

Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions:
(brought to you by your Vocational Service Group)

The Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called from in the Object of Rotary:

Recognize the honour and respect due to all occupations which are useful to society.

Membership Goal

Net 5 new members – By wearing your Rotary Pin, people will ask about Rotary. Why not ask them out to a meeting? Ask out a membership prospect today. Get your free prospect first visit lunch ticket from Rotarian Susan.

Rotary Foundation Target

$130 Canadian – Every Rotarian, every year! What a birthday gift to the people of the world. Send your donation to The Rotary Foundation of Canada, P.O. Box 9988, Postal Station A, Toronto, Ontario, M5W 2J2. See Rotarian Michael Cooksey for the information.

Barbecuing

Barbecuing is the only type of cooking a real man will do. When a man declares he will BBQ the following chain of events is put into motion:

  1. The woman goes to the store and buys everything.
  2. The woman makes the salad, vegetables, and dessert.
  3. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man, who is lounging beside the grill, beer in hand.
  4. The man places the meat on the grill.
  5. The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
  6. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.
  7. The man takes the meat off the grill and hands it to the woman.
  8. The woman prepares the plates and brings them to the table.
  9. After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.
  10. Everyone praises man and thanks him for his cooking efforts.
  11. The man asks the woman how she enjoyed her night off. And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing a woman.

Celebrations

Wow – none this week.
