LAST PROGRAM – July 19, 2005
Yvonne Spain – Children in Distress

Gene Burns was very pleased to introduce Yvonne Spain to us and her many supporters, as she just arrived in Canada for the first time on July 11 th. From here she is going to New York to see the “Angel Network,” which is sponsored by Oprah Winfrey.

Yvonne was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She belongs to an organization called CINDI, which stands for “Children in Distress,” and she networks for children affected by AIDS. Yvonne is a member of many boards and has been commended for her community service by a Rotary Club in her home town, although she is not a Rotarian.

Yvonne took the stand and addressed President Rebecca as Madame President Sir, which is a formal way of addressing female parliamentary members in her country. She told all of us that she was glad to be here and noticed our Canadian flag to be very prevalent. Yvonne gave a special thank you to all her supporters in our large audience today.

Yvonne feels that we are doing well with our war on polio and wants us to make the same difference with the devastation of AIDS.

Next we were treated to a presentation about the area she now lives in and her home town of Pietermaritzburg. There is a lot of interesting historical information about this area, and we saw the train station where Mahatma Ghandi was ousted from the train in his protest of the white settlers, and learned some more about Nelson Mandela.

Then there was the bleak truth about a country ravaged by drought and AIDS. In her home town, there is 35% unemployment and many families are torn apart by disease and death. It is important for children to receive an anti retral virus drug for the HIV virus, but these are not available due to a loss of access to health care and immunization. The orphanages are full of grief stricken children, who lack mentoring and role models. Also, it costs about $30CDN for a school year, and as these children do not have these funds, they end up being illiterate.

Fortunately, the Children in Distress Network boasts 103 members who work together to lobby governments, supply information and do collaborative fund raising. Our own Stephen Lewis, who is on a special envoy to Africa from the UN, has made some poignant statements about the crisis in Africa.

With free membership to CINDI, these committed people are mandated to:

  1. Provide home based care;
  2. Encourage young people, help them make safe choices;
  3. Provide homes for adoption;
  4. Reach out to the community for assistance;
  5. Help a child realize it is loved.

There are many other services that they work on, such as providing nutritional advice, taking into consideration the native habitat. For instance, they discovered that a local weed has more nutrients than spinach. Other projects are access to medical supplies such as gloves and Vaseline, etc., sanitation in housing, water needs, and education.

Yvonne then advised us about funding and strategic partners and brought us up to date on the guiding principles, achievements, funding and publications that are available.

She ended her speech with the word, “Halala,” which means congratulations or the sound of joy.

David Maynes was very impressed with her talk and powerful screen images and thanked Yvonne Spain for taking the time to inform us about her organization.

Announcements

Gerry Bradler kindly presented Bruce Pettit a photograph album with many memories of his term as President.

Bruce Pettit reminded us to let him know how many Ribfest posters we require to put up around town.

Bert Geary addressed our Club and let us know that Murial Williamson, wife of Cliff Williamson (former member) had passed away last year, and her executor has been in touch with Don Hall. Murial has kindly left in her will some funds for our own Club Foundation, to be used directly for the Scarborough community.

Pat Agnew needs prizes for the karaoke participants and gifts for the entertainers at Ribfest.

Doug Gray has received a message from the Agincourt Rotary Club to help out on July 23 rd by volunteering or giving blood. We have a great speaker coming on August 2 nd, so please come out and enjoy the police officer’s talk.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall believes there is about $295 in the pot and a lucky winner will get half of that. Barb Callery won with #3 and kindly donated her token $2 back to the Club.

Blue Badge Presentation

President Rebecca proudly presented Douglas Gray with his permanent blue badge in recognition of him completing all the requirements needed to obtain this. Congratulations, Doug!

The registration for this event is at 8:00 a.m., with the walk beginning at 9:00 a.m. This should end around noon, with a complimentary lunch, followed by ceremonies and a presentation at 1:00 a.m. Chris gave us quite a lengthy speech about the history of Richmond Hill and promised to leave some brochures about this important event.

Sergeant-at-Arms – John and Pat Agnew

John and Pat are starting off their SAA duties with a kinder, gentler approach, keeping things on a positive level. They asked for happy bucks and true confessions, with a prize for the most deserving tale.

Bruce Pettit started out with a happy buck for his daughter, Lisa’s, 16 th birthday with the gratifying knowledge that she will now enter an age of reasonableness.

Jim Foster is happy to be amongst so many visiting eager Rotarians.

Ron Marsh always has a buck and should give others a turn.

Hamish Wong is delighted that Nevine Yassa is back after 100 months, as he missed her special e-mails and paid 100 cents in the hopes of seeing her more often.

Donna Worden is also happy, but the editor missed her joy.

Pat Agnew was surprised when someone told her all about the Ribfest and the great entertainment, which Pat herself has organized!

John Agnew paid $5 as he had a great vacation.

Bruce Pettit being a father of a teenager, deserved the big prize!
