LAST PROGRAM July 26, 2005
Harry Hakomaki – Ribest – The Final Frontier

Harry Hakomaki kindly filled in to complete the program today. We were all very eager to hear about the preparations for the 4 th Annual Scarborough Rotary Ribfest.

Harry explained the Ribfest Committee starts working in October/November of the preceeding year in order to be fully prepared for the Civic Holiday weekend, the following August. Harry then asked all the members of the Ribfest Committee to stand up and be recognized.

Mike Cooksey, Robert Tang and Kim Nilsson worked very hard getting sponsors and were very successful, exceeding previous years’ sponsorship dollars.

Bruce Pettit diligently organized the very important advertising and he explained about the distribution of flyers, newspaper advertising and posters. He also warned that media attention is still forthcoming, such as television and radio coverage, but these usually get finalized at the last minute.

Barb Callery and Eileen Smith organized our volunteers and reminded us that they always need more helpers, especially on Sunday and Monday. They explained some of the rules and how we qualify for shirts and t-shirts.

Pat and John Agnew enthusiastically described the entertainment schedule. There will lots of bands, along with karaoke for adults and children. On Saturday, the theme is rock and roll and on Sunday, we will enjoy country western music. Watch out for Chris Musselman demonstrating her line dancing skills. On Monday, the fare will be mixed including bands, crooners and jazz musicians. An important addition is a dance floor, so Pat wants all of us to gather around and watch the bands when needed and start the dancing so all the audience will work up a big thirst!

Gary MacGregor congratulated Pat and John on their efforts as they managed to find great quality entertainment at only 10% of the cost of other Ribfests.

Donna Worden gave an overview of the opening ceremonies, scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 29 th. Ben Wentzell is this year’s Master of Ceremonies and will be introducing President Rebecca, followed by many dignitaries, such as MPP’s, councilors and the Chief of Police. This will be followed by taste testing, which is a popular media event.

We are expecting many employees from Ben’s employer, Carswell Publishing, to be there on Friday, as they will be enjoying the afternoon at our Ribfest as a corporate social event.

Harry helped us visualize the site and explained that there are three beer locations, two pop and water locations, with two new secure ticket booths in convenient spots. We have added two ATM’s so our patrons will never run out of beer money. At the Rotary/Membership tent, we are selling t-shirts, handiwipes and canvass bags.

Besides ribs, the ribbers also sell chicken and one is offering beef brisket. Other vendors will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, souvlaki, corn, fruit, ice cream and special kettle popcorn. All the vendors have food certification forms from the City of Toronto. The Inner Wheel will have a booth providing tea and coffee.

Harry also told us that Billy Gordon Amusements now has a new ride and is a major sponsor, both with cash and as a percentage of his weekend’s earnings. We are pleased that Jeff Mittman is providing a refrigerated trailer. Dave Johnston will be on hand at the west entrance with an array of his wares.

Don’t forget about the Ribfest Raffle, with the grand prize of a trip for two to Bermuda, second prize is a 27” flat screen television from the Cederbrae Canadian Tire and Millie Taverner has donated a dinner for eight, as a wonderful third prize.

So, all in all, it promises to be a great weekend, with both hard work and fun, and the weather forecast is fantastic!

Attendance

On July 26 th, we had 44 Rotarians in attendance and six visitors. President Rebecca had brought her son, Jake, and we all said “hello.” David Maynes wanted us to meet Joe Rosiejak who has come all the way from Scotland to help us with the Ribfest! Chris Musselman introduced two reoccurring visitors, Jeff Mittman and Elaine Vollett, from the Markham Sunrise Club, as well as Krystyna Benyak, from the North Scarborough Rotary Club, who is also going to assist with Ribfest. Mike Cooksey let us know that his wife, Sandra, is amongst friends again.

Announcements

Judy Lewthwaite announced that the Group 1 (Bluffer, Program and Club Service) has moved their meeting from August 10 to August 3, at Audrey McCaskill’s home at 7:30 p.m.

Doug Gray reminded us about our important guest speaker next Tuesday and although we might be exhausted from Ribfest, we should try to make it out for lunch.

Gary MacGregor brought to our attention the Salmon Fishing on August 9 th, but warned that because of the heat wave, the salmon might have gone to cooler waters.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Don Hall is now sure there is $360 in the pot and again lucky Barb Callery won with #13 (#3 last week) and donated her token $2 back to the Club, with high hopes for bigger, luckier wins in the future.

Annual Salmon Fishing Competition

Tuesday, August 9 – 2:30 – 8:30 p.m. Scarborough Rotary Club versus North Scarborough Rotary Club. See Gary MacGregor for details.

Rotary International Foundation Walk – Sunday, September 11, 2005

The objective is to raise $150,000 by our District. The registration for this event is at 8:00 a.m. in Richmond Hill, with the walk beginning at 9:00 a.m. This should end around noon, with a complimentary lunch, followed by ceremonies and a presentation at 1:00 p.m.

Sad News

Don Hall’s brother, Barry, passed away on July 26 th. Our thoughts are with Don, Maria and the rest of his family.

Other News

Club Membership Dues – These are now due and should be made payable to the Rotary Club of Scarborough then remitted to Don Hall. The price is the same as last year. Don won’t charge interest if you pay in time!

Eye Glasses – give your used eye glasses to Gerry Bradler. These will “open the world” to needy people.

Let Judy, Audrey or Sheila know if any Rotarian or their families are ill, so we can send the appropriate gift/card to them, on behalf of the Scarborough Rotary Club.

Sergeant-at-Arms – John and Pat Agnew

Once again, there is a gift for the most poignant or interesting tale!

Dave Johnston is celebrating his birthday and Ribfest at the same time! He is also thankful to Chris Musselman for thinking about his employees. (Your editor missed the reason why, perhaps they travel?)

Mike Murton does not have a true confession and has been very good, as well as being pleased about his Club Anniversary.

Victor Shastri quietly told us about something… and your editor just saw lips moving.

Hamish Wong paid a happy buck because he is delighted to see Derek Tarlton back!

Eileen Smith was also very happy, perhaps about all the volunteers for Ribfest?

Ben Wentzell left early, but not without leaving a donation.

Gus Vlastakis was just a little late, and paid a little confession.

Elaine Vollett is very happy about her fund raising garage sale for D.R.E.A.M.S. and made $2,000!

Chris Musselman thinks the advertising for Ribfest has just been marvelous, especially when she saw the section in the Scarborough Mirror.

Jeff Mittman let us know that one of his trucks and a tractor were stolen and if we think we see same just sitting looking abandoned, call 1-877-MITTMAN.

Bruce Pettit said he has learned a new word from President Rebecca.

Brian Philcox said that due to an error in a newspaper article, we actually got promoted twice for Ribfest and he is also glad that middle aged people like Joe Rosiejak can still lose weight!

Harry Hakomaki is happy about his wedding anniversary to Ellyn on July 29, but confesses that she is getting tired of celebrating this with ribs. Therefore, he will take her away for a couple of weeks and she can dine as she pleases!

Dave Johnston was the lucky recipient of the SAA Award.
