David Maynes ¡V Classification Talk

We were all very pleased to see Dale Maynes attending our lunch meeting as she rarely gets a chance to escape from her office. She thinks of herself an expert on David, considering that they have been married for 32 years and are the proud parents of two sons. David wanted at first to join the Inner Wheel, but luckily for everyone, David decided to join Rotary.

David came to the stand and looked at all the familiar faces. He thanked us for the opportunity to address our group and confessed that he doesn't often talk about himself. He wondered what his biggest accomplishments were and since it is his son, Damian's, 31 st birthday today, he realizes that having a loving family is a proud achievement.

David was born in a village in Trinidad , which he described as very cosmopolitan. His tutelage was done not only by his parents, but by an entire community. He said he was always in trouble and it was accepted that he could be disciplined by everyone. What it also meant was that lots of people were looking out for him.

He started in the work force as a junior accountant, but it was not his forte, so he switched to teaching in 1969, specializing in mathematics, English and Spanish language. But he was always interested in the communication industry and immigrated to Canada in 1972. David did not intend to stay here, but he met Dale, quit his job in Trinidad , got married in 1974 and started pursuing post graduate studies at the University of Toronto .

He started working for the Canadian National Railroad, which was a leader in communications with cutting edge technology. Since it was a crown corporation, they had lots of funds for research. David stayed with them for 27 years and now works as a consultant.

David explained how everyone wants to be connected and he can assist by teaching and demonstrating how to use the computer and internet more effectively. The average person is terrified by the equipment and programs, and sometimes do not have any idea where to start. David reassured us by telling us not to be afraid, you can just switch the computer off and on and most of the time, this solves the problem.

David's expertise is in general contracting in homes and small businesses, and he can even wire up the premises! He helps people from being ripped off, assists with their needs and this makes him feel good.

He also sees this in Rotary. David wants to do things for people and his community, in return for the lots of help he received in his career. He said that he loved Ribfest and gave us all a big thank you for the opportunity to be a Rotarian.

Gerry Bradler took some nice pictures of Dale and David and Robert Tang wanted to know what hobbies David is interested in. David explained that besides his addiction to golf, he enjoys cycling, weight training, soccer and hockey. He insists that Dale will be joining him soon at the t-off!

Attendance

On August 9 th , we had 32 Rotarians and three visitors. John Agnew wanted us to meet Garry Stein, who is an accountant from the Westward Rotary Club in Montreal . Brian Philcox brought our attention to Elaine Vollett, who is in the process of transferring to our Club. He was also very pleased to welcome Xerses Patel, who is the chiropractor involved in over 200 neck and head treatments at Ribfest!

Brian also welcomed back Peter Barsony, who has been absent for a while.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

Gary MacGregor stood in for Don Hall and let us know that approximately $516 is in the pot. Elaine Vollett won with #38, but it landed it on a 10, so she had no money to spend!

Sergeant-at-Arms – John and Pat Agnew

John and Pat noticed there are lots of happy celebrations, such as John Agnew's happy birthday buck.

Gary MacGregor was reminded about his anniversary to Ruth and gladly paid up.

Robert Tang paid a thrilled buck for his wife, Jennifer's, birthday and the fact that child #2 is on its way in January.

Bob Johnston quietly apologized for not being at Ribfest, but the editor missed the excuse.

Dave Johnston brought our attention to information he previously handed out about the ¡§The Weekend to End Breast Cancer¡¨ walk that he and Maureen are going on again this year. Last year they raised over $18,000. See Dave or go on-line at www.endcancer.ca to sponsor them or for more information. The walk is on September 10/11for 60 kms.

Geoff Dean paid some happy bucks for his 42 nd wedding anniversary and for the good memories it gives him.

Elaine Vollett has happy and sad. She was happy to have her granddaughter stay for three nights in a row with her, but sad that it made her miss Ribfest.

Bruce Pettit was glad of the reminder about his wedding anniversary to Ingrid.

David Maynes had some happy bucks because his wife and fellow Rotarian, Dale, is here today and it is also his son's birthday.

Gus Vlastakis is proud of his club anniversary.

Doug Gray went to visit his daughter last weekend and heard his grandson say his first audible words.

Norm Rhora paid some grateful bucks for all the Rotarians helping out at the Bendale Summerfest this Saturday.

Eileen Smith was happy that she won a television set at the Ribfest Raffle!

Kim Nilsson paid a late buck.

Bob Johnston got a gift for the most pathetic excuse for not being at Ribfest.

Reader's Digest Funny Files

My friend's preparations for a visit from her children included a trip to the bank. Waiting in line at the teller's window, she lamented to the middle-aged man behind her, ¡§My children are in their 20's, and I'm still giving them money. ¡§When does it end?¡¨

¡§I'm not sure,¡¨ the man replied while glancing uncomfortably at a paper in his hand, ¡§but I'm not the one to ask. I'm here to deposit a cheque my mother gave me.¡¨

Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions:
(brought to you by your Vocational Service Group)

The Declaration of Rotarians in Business and Professions was adopted by the Rotary International Council on Legislation in 1989 to provide more specific guidelines for the high ethical standards called from in the Object of Rotary:

Consider my vocation another opportunity to serve.

New Birds and Bees (contributed by John Woods)

The New Birds & the Bees: The mystery is gone ... How was I born?

The little boy asks his father¡X¡§Daddy, how was I born?¡¨ Dad responds:

Ah, my son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway! Well, you see, your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on AOL. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, where your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a blessed little Popup appeared and said: ¡§You've got male!¡¨

Finally ¡V A Male Blonde Joke

Blonde guy gets home early from work and hears strange noises coming from the bedroom. He rushes upstairs to find his wife naked on the bed, sweating and panting.

"What's up?" he says.

"I'm having a heart attack," cries the woman.

He rushes downstairs to grab the phone, but just as he's dialing, his 4-year-old son comes up and says "Daddy! Daddy! Uncle Ted's hiding in your closet and he's got no clothes on!"

The guy slams the phone down and storms upstairs into the bedroom, past his screaming wife, and rips open the wardrobe door. Sure enough, there is his brother, totally naked, cowering on the closet floor.

You rotten S.O.B.," says the husband, "my wife's having a heart attack and you're running around naked scaring the kids!"
