Don Hall – Swan Song

Since Don was already running our meeting, he certainly needed no introduction! But Don did say that 35 years ago when he became Club President, he took the podium for his inaugural address, and all the Club Members got up and left. Apparently Shelly Lush and Jack Webster thought that was funny.

This year has gone very quickly for Don, but he said being President a second time is a wonderful experience – others should try it!

During this Rotary year, Don was grateful for the help of all his Board Members, Chairpersons and regular Club Members too. In addition, Don mentioned the extra support he has had from Gary and Audrey, especially with Springfest and Ribfest.

The main focus this year by President Wilf was on Water, Literacy, and Hunger, and Don felt our Club has included all these aims in our projects. Don then listed the activities accomplished by each group, and thanked the Board Members and chairpersons for their work on the many projects.

In addition, we now have the Scarborough Rotary Foundation up and running, have participated in a Vision Program for the future, and of course contributed to Polio Plus. Since he did not want to miss anyone, Don did not name any more individual members, except to say that he will miss Sheila, who has done such a good job of getting out messages all year.

In closing, Don said this year has surpassed his hopes of our Club helping to make the world a better place, and thanked the Club for everything they have all done.
Don then presented a President’s Pin to Victor and Vic presented a Past President’s Pin in return – the second one for Don.

Audrey advised that it was now time to present Don with a parting gift – a very handsome Rotary watch, so he should never be late for meetings.

Victor Shastri – Inaugural Address

Victor now addressed the Club, saying that he was nervous, but very happy, and humbled by the confidence the club has placed in him for this year. Members of Victor’s family have been part of Rotary, including his brother who visited last week.

During the 10 years Victor has been a member of our Club, he has chaired committees, acted as Club Secretary, and worked on many projects. He feels some of the previous presidents have done very well, and is committed to doing as good a job – with help from all members, of course.

Victor does not want to make changes just for the sake of changing. Instead, changes should be made as a clear means of doing something better, quicker, and more efficiently. This year’s R I Convention was the second one attended by Victor, where he was able to meet incoming R I President D K Lee, and will work towards his goal to Make Dreams Real.

Victor wants to emphasize Membership, continue with Community and International projects, participate in the Rotary Peace Summit, and reinforce the Vision Committee to guide our Club into the future. Since he did not have a lot of time, Victor did not outline all his plans for the year, but did mention that we all need to work on Ribfest to again make it a success.

Victor concluded by thanking Don for standing in for 2 weeks, while Victor was busy with his daughter’s wedding. Finally, Victor asked Shirley Zinman to come forward to receive her Sergeant At Arms pin, and Mike Murton to receive his Club Secretary pin.

But there were more presentations!! Jim Foster had made a very special wood carving of P P Don Hall, in which he resembled Winston Churchill – and Don was actually smiling!

Then Lina presented Victor with a display piece showing his name (Vijay Shastri) as incoming President, along with the Make Dreams Real motto and logo.

Both these works of art were well received!!

Attendance

Today we had 47 Rotarians and guests – lots of guests. They included:

Nita and Roul Shastri and their sons Daven and Viren, and cousin Oliver.
Blake Jones, Past President of Cobourg Rotary Club. Zrinka Majtanic, daughter of Maria Hall.
Rebecca Hunter, Past President of our Club, and current President of Milton Club.
Ryan Rowland, guest of Paul.

Jim started to introduce guests from the UK, who have many honours in addition to being Rotarians. Mike then properly introduced Basil Clarke and his wife Jennifer, from Hansworth, near Birmingham, and their family guests Barbara and Rex Bitter. Basil did mention the 2009 R I Convention in Birmingham, and hoped we’d all be there.

Last, but most important, Maria Hall, and Maina Shastri.

Announcements

RIBFEST! Bruce mentioned that he has flyers and posters available. He then explained that they had just met with the OPP, and been advised that EVERYONE connected to the sale of tickets, admittance, and service of beer or alcohol MUST have a Smart Serve certificate!! Anyone in this category who does not already have the certificate can go online to Smart Serve Ontario (www.smartserveontario.com) and do the course that way. It costs $35.00, which will be reimbursed by the Club – if you pass. Don’t delay!

Gary mentioned that we still need Ribfest Volunteers – please let him or Ruth know.

Woods Cunningham Wheel

There was no draw this week because of time restraints and because Don won all the money the previous week.

Sergeant-at-Arms

Again due to time constraints, Don announced that anyone who felt they wanted to contribute could just come and do so.

Audrey paid because her granddaughter’s Swim Team came in 5th out of 24 top teams in Russia.

Rebecca was happy to be here with us.

Daven was pleased to attend with his family.

Mike Cooksey paid because he has just become a Vice President at BMO/Harris!! Congratulations Mike!

Chris paid as a Thank You for all the good wishes from all the Club members during her recent time off for surgery, which went very well.

Shirley wanted to amend last week’s S of A record, as total receipts were over $150.00!

From The Philosophy Library of Geoff Dean

  1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
  2. When you say, 'I'm sorry,' look the person in the eye.
  3. Never laugh at anyone's dream. People who don't have dreams don't have much.
  4. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to live life completely.
  5. In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.
  6. Don't judge people by their relatives.
  7. Talk slowly but think quickly.
  8. When someone asks you a question you don't want to answer, smile and ask, 'Why do you want to know?'
  9. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
  10. When you lose, don't lose the lesson!
  11. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.
  12. Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
  13. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
  14. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
  15. Spend some time alone.
