Malvern Kids Games – Amy Stavropoulos

We helped sponsor this event through our Community Service Committee. It was a five-day event in July for 5-10 year olds.
Amy was asked to organize the event with the curriculum set by this international organization which started in Egypt and now includes 150 countries. She insisted that it be free to all participants so that there was no financial obstacle to attendance. Amy was raised in Malvern and had previously worked with Parks & Recreation, so she brought ample experience to the task.

The goal was to create partnerships and show how everyone can work well together. The curriculum is value-based, non-religious, and has daily themes.

Amy solicited volunteers and cooperation from community organizations, including churches, Toronto Police Services, Toronto District school Board. Our donation served to buy t-shirts for all participants.

A key objective is to build self-esteem through programs that emphasize such foci as “I am important” and “I am champion.”
The involvement of the police was part of their increasing community involvement, especially with young people in “tough” neighbourhoods. Many kids are taught to fear or be wary of the police and getting to know police officers and do activities with them can form better relationships and trust.

Amy showed us many photographs, especially of the opening ceremonies, at which they had a Toronto Argonauts player and a number of mascots.

Over the other days, the kids played sports – to emphasize skill-building, teamwork and leadership - and games designed to bring out values such as respect and purpose. In all, they talked about what are the challenges and how to overcome them, and how to make the right decisions.

Many teenagers volunteered as leaders, and all tried to give kids individual attention.

Now Amy hopes that the community will be able to continue to offer this program themselves on a continuing basis, and then all will benefit.

From The Humour Library of Geoff Dean

Three friends have had enough of studying and worrying about their physics final exam. They relieve the worry by heading to their favorite pub and drinking themselves stupid. Next morning, hung over, they sleep through the exam.

They tell their professor they missed the exam because, while driving in to school, their car blew a tire, they didn't have a spare, they had to wait for a tow.

Their professor agrees to schedule a make-up exam that afternoon, but tells them they'll have to take the test in different rooms.

At the appointed hour, each sits alone at a desk with the test face-down when the professor's voice over the intercom instructs, "Turn your papers over and begin." And each student reads:

FINAL EXAM.
"Which tire?"
