International Service – Group II

Norm Rhora summarized his Committee’s responsibilities which encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to PolioPlus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries. Our Club has been a strong supporter of both the Ambassadorial Scholar, and the Group Study Exchange (GSE) programs. At present, the Committee is in the process of supporting an Ethiopian project that deals with mothers living with HIV and their children. The new Future Vision Plan updates the Foundation’s mission and creates a more effective and efficient way to help Rotarians develop diverse projects with greater impact and sustainable outcomes. The Vision Plan is designed to simplify Foundation programs and processes; as well as, increase the sense of ownership at the district and club levels by transferring more decisions to the districts. Our district 7070 was chosen to be involved in the pilot provided we accept the training and education required.

Fundraising – Group IV

Bruce Pettit filled in for both Buddy and Gary who were absent. Bruce apologized for not having any hard numbers to present but summarized that both fundraising events Springfest, and Ribfest net profits would be lower. The former was probably due to a lower attendance this year and the latter was probably attributable to the civic workers strike and stricter drinking and driving thresholds. Gary will be back shortly from his annual vacation in September to present a comprehensive report.

Membership – Group V

Mike Cooksey spoke on behalf of the Committee. He said that the recent fireside event was both successful and well organized. 3 new members were the result of the evening. The goal this year for our Club is to enlist 12 new members for the year or 1 per month. The committee also has an invitation piece being produced and hopes to implement it shortly.

President Michael announced that he was pleased with the Foundation Walk in Trenton this past Sunday. 450 Rotarians attended including 10 members from our Club to help raise a total of $120,000 for the day. Our very own Bert Geary also attended.

President Michael announced that the Club will be circulating a letter that contains the criteria for the major fund project. Questions surrounding the criteria can be directed at the Visioning Committee Members.

President Michael updated the Club on Case’s wife. Chris is ailing from Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Phone calls and letters to Case are welcome.

Kim Nilsson announced that she is collecting musical instruments for needy children at an Aboriginal community north of Thunder Bay.

Mike Cooksey announced that next week’s speaker Rod McQueen will be speaking about his latest book on Manulife’s Dominic D’Allesandro. Rod has previously written on the Eatons, and Bronfmans. Mike also apologized for being away recently due to several Rotary Zone meetings.

Audrey McCaskill announced that the memorial for Kathleen Tarlton is on October 23rd from 4-6pm, at her residence 38 Lyme Regis Ave. in Scarborough.

.Woods Cunningham Wheel

Sandy, our visiting Rotarian from Scotland, spun the wheel for the $1,050 pot! Bob Johnston held the winning number 25. Bob then asked Sandy to spin again and low-and-behold he landed the “Ace of Hearts!”

Sergeant-at-Arms

Gerard mentioned that he forewarned Members a few weeks ago to wear their Rotary pin. Today he fined those who forgot to wear their pin.

Shirley paid a happy buck to celebrate her Club anniversary.

Skip paid a happy buck to celebrate his son Barry’s 50th birthday.

Donna paid a happy buck for celebrating her Club anniversary and also having the company of her Scottish Rotarian friend Sandy.

Josie was inspired by fellow Rotarian Gus who participated in the Foundation Walk despite having a bad leg to walk on.

Gus thanked those who sponsored him for the Walk.

Jimmy was grateful yet skeptical of a fellow Rotarian who lent him his own badge because Jimmy’s was missing.

Mike Cooksey was happy to announce that he is leaving tomorrow to North Carolina for 4 days to play golf!

Bruce was bullied by Gerard into paying a sad buck for being a tad late. Bruce claims he was simply working on a prospect and lost track of time!
