Membership Committee
President Mike introduced Lina, the
Director of the Membership Committee, who then named
the members of the Group: Chair Mike Cooksey, Secretary
Chris, Members Skip, Nnamdi, Paul, Kim, Syd, Ron, Jack
and Jim. Lina advised that our program for today had
2 parts: First – Our Membership Activities and
Goals for the year, and Second, the Induction of 3 new
members to our Club.
To develop Membership, Lina stated that we need to attract
new Members and retain present Members. Our Goal for
the year is 12 New Members. Although Lina’s Committee
leads the Club’s efforts, it is the responsibility
of each Member to recruit new Members. Lina asked each
Member to reach out to friends, family, business associates
and other people in the community, and ask them to join
our Rotary Club.
Lina then introduced Kim, who started by giving out
an Invitation Card to everyone. The idea of Membership
in our Club must start by approaching people, and inviting
them to a meeting. Kim asked – how did each of
us join? and asked us to reflect on that. Perhaps we
were invited because we were already doing things in
the Community, and wanted to do more. What did each
of us think were the benefits of Membership when we
first joined? Who do we know who might enjoy these benefits,
and have something to offer?
The Invitation card is too big to fit into your pocket,
where you’ll forget it. Please sign it at the
bottom on the Invitation line, and keep it handy to
give to someone to use. It will get them a free lunch,
and a chance to find out about the benefits of Rotary.
Everyone should use it to invite someone, and we’ll
give you more cards as you need them.
Sydney then gave out a card explaining the concept
of Associate Membership. This plan is for people who
are unsure of the level of commitment they can give,
but who want to be involved. It lets them “try
us out” for just $25.00 for a year, to see what
Rotary is about, and whether they like us – and
if we like them. Especially good for young professionals,
Sydney explained that the Associate Membership lets
them serve along side us, and get to know how Rotary
can fit into their plans.
Mike Cooksey mentioned that the Associate Membership
has worked very well for the Burlington Club, and is
a great opportunity for us to promote to prospects.
Mike then asked the Club the question: “What does
a Potential Rotarian Look Like?”
After giving a few minutes for each table to discuss
it, Mike asked Chris to record the answers, as follows:
- Anybody here in this room
- Wide range of ages, physical appearances
- Someone educated and intelligent
- Someone honest and reliable
- Someone generous and able to give part of their
time
- Anyone who appears to be interested in Rotary
- Someone who makes a difference in the Community
- Don’t forget busy people, as they often can
make time to join
- Both male and female were suggested
In summary – ANYONE may be a potential Rotarian!
HOMEWORK was then given to the Club:
Mike asked everyone to answer the question
What Do YOU Want Your Rotary Club to Do?
Please bring your answers to the meeting on 27 October.
INDUCTIONS
Past President Sydney called the Inductees and their
Sponsors to come forward. They are:
Alvino Acosta – Sponsor Lina / Dianna Winson –
Sponsor Judy / Hermann Pfeller – Sponsor Vic
Sydney advised that these people were joining over
1 million other Rotarians in 32,000 Clubs around the
World. President Mike gave out pins and Four Way Test
plaques.
After the inductions were done, the Members rose to
applaud and welcome our newest Members.
