Michael Gregory- BMO Economist:

President Michael called upon Michael Cooksey to introduce our speaker Michael Gregory who is a Senior Economist, as well as Managing Director of BMO Capital Markets.

With twenty years of experience in Canadian and U.S. economic and financial markets research, he works closely with capital market traders, sales force and their clients. Mr. Gregory provides high-frequency market and economic analyses and contributes to the BMO weekly publication, Focus. He also authors the monthly Rates Scenario report that provides clients with the firm's view on interest rates and foreign exchange rates.

Michael graduated from Concordia University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Commerce, and then completed the Master of Arts program at the University of Western Ontario. Michael also did doctoral studies at Fordham University in New York City. He also holds a Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Michael Gregory gave us a very comprehensive presentation on the present financial situation globally and both the Canadian and US economy.
Here are some of the topics that he presented: The details can be obtained by visiting the following website at www.bmonesbittburns.com/economics.

  • The “V” in Recovery
  • Financial Market revive
  • Key economic indicators turn
  • Recovery Beginning
  • Canada’s Recession: Rapid but not extreme
  • When US sneezes Canada catches cold...
  • Commodity prices rebounding
  • Housing resale rebounding, starts stabilizing
  • Canadian existing home prices perk up
  • Credit Crisis not as severe in Canada
  • Canadian businesses boast. Business bankruptcy dropped during recession
  • Fed balance sheet more than doubl
  • Unemployment rates to continue rising
  • Greenback giving gains back
  • Loonies and commodities: happy to be together
  • First Global recession since WWII history
  • Comparing the recoveries. Comparing the recessions
  • Risks: post-stimulus US/ Global growth could fade too much
  • Adjustment to stronger Loonies could prove too onerous
  • Canadian economic growth to outpace US/G-7 next year
  • Stock and Commodity prices continue to increase on global recovery

Being a popular topic the presentation was long. There was not enough time for a question/ answer period; however President Michael did allow one question.

Robert thanked our speaker and presented him with a book about Canada.
