Heather Urbansky - West Hill Community
Services
Gerard expressed pleasure at having
the Interact members with us today. He introduced the
daughter of Hamish, a mascot who has raised ½
a million dollars by being sent around the world.
He then introduced our guest today, Heather Urbansky
from the West Hill Community Services. Apparently Toronto
has 18 Community Health Centres whereas Scarborough
has 1 ½. One at Kennedy and Sheppard and a new
one at Brimley and Eglinton.
The centre is supported by the Ministry of health and
the United Way and will open in February. There is a
living wall painting, a Health unit manned by 12 individuals
who are part of a Diabetes team for training and testing
individuals and there is a Seniors’ Club with
many varied activities.
Heather thanked us for gathering food for them today
as they have a great need, particularly this year. The
increase in demand for food and social support has increased
by 50%. There 50,000 a month requiring assistance.
Attendance
There were 50 people in attendance today as we had
13 Interact students from Winston Churchill Collegiate
Institute - Ramya Amuthan, Anushree Soni, Sageesan Thevanathan,
Kelvin Wong, Thirumaran Vimlarsaran, Risanth Kandeepan,
Muhammad Naqvi, Ziqi Huang, Ting Ting Lin, Jon Davies-Hall,
Pirathish, Vandit Pandya, Darianne Timbang - accompanied
by their two staff advisors Long time Dianalyn Kennedy,
and Leila Knetsch and the VP of the school, Ken Mulgrew.
We had a visiting Rotarian Ainul Haque from Bangladesh
and a friend of Alexandra, Lina Tiklonsky. There were
31 Rotarians present.
Announcements
Gary told us that Gus Vlastakis suffered
a stroke two weeks ago. It has affected his speech and
the right side of his body. He is at Providence Centre.
We wish Gus all the best.
Our guest Ainul from Bangladesh told
us that he is here in Toronto to meet his new grandson.
He is a past President and his present club has about
30 members in the capital. He told of two projects his
club is involved in. One is a clinic under a doctor’s
direction for disabled children and the other a school
their club has assisted.
Alex was called to the podium to get
her badge and second plaque as she didn’t get
them last week when she was inducted.
Mike M. shared the picture of Edinburgh
Castle by Wm Green, sent to our club with Best Christmas
wishes from our Scottish friends and Interactors. Mike
also referred to the calendar that each of the host
families received from Joe and company. The calendar
has a nice selection of memory shots of the kids enjoying
the activities they did while they were here.
Shirley announced that Audrey had
the toys for the Christmas families and that each Rotarian
involved should call her to reserve their toy. There
was also a selection of girls and female adult clothing
that were only slightly used for the Christmas families
at Shirley’s.
