If you missed that delicious meal and
exciting auction on Tuesday evening be sure to read
the Bluffer to catch up on all the latest news.
Our Christmas Buffet started with Rotarians
and guests imbibing, mixing and mingling, women in shiny
or Christmas coloured outfits and many Rotarian men
in very Christmassy ties. The tables and decorations
were beautiful to behold.
The food was plentiful and delicious with such an array
of foods that all of us were tempted to go to the buffet
not only once - but not any of us were counting.
President Mike opened our meeting although it was after
we had already eaten by asking Gene for an invocation.
It was an inspiringly appropriate invocation followed
by the usual toast. Guests were then introduced- Sydney
introduced the ladies at their table, Jimmy introduced
all at his, Judy introduced Sheila, Pat, John, Joe,
Marie, Karen, Dan, Diana, Lena, Alex, Gerard, Geoff,
Adam, Gary, Bruce all introduced their companions. Mike
announced that we were not going to have the Woods Cunningham
Wheel or the Sergeant-at-Arms for this meeting.
Gene asked to make an announcement and he told us that
it was Marion’s birthday today so we sang Happy
Birthday to her. Shirley announced that Dan was to celebrate
a birthday tomorrow, December 16, so we sang Happy Birthday
Tomorrow Dan. We were reminded that there is a meeting
on the 22nd.
Past President Victor was then asked to come to the
podium and address us. President Michael, honored guests,
and fellow Rotarians, as the immediate past President
of the Club, it is my privilege and great pleasure to
have the opportunity to present two awards - The Rotarian
of the Year and the Paul Harris Fellow awards. Victor
started with the Rotarian of the Year award. This award
recognizes a Rotarian who has demonstrated exemplary
humanitarian service, in any form and at any level,
with emphasis on personal volunteer efforts and active
involvement in helping others through Rotary. The Rotary
Board of Directors 2008/9 has selected and honor Bruce
Pettit as be the recipient of this year’s award.
Past President and Vice President Bruce Pettit, was
asked to come forward to receive the award. Bruce was
definitely taken aback, wondering how this selection
was made without his being aware of it.
He said that he felt like Obama receiving his award
- liking it but with mixed emotions in receiving it.
The Paul Harris Fellow award is an award created in
the memory of Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary. This
award is the highest honor that Rotary International
can grant an individual. This evening there are two
Paul Harris Fellow recipients. Both of this year’s
recipients have uniquely demonstrated outstanding service.
The individuals have contributed to our Rotary Club,
to Rotary in general, to the overall betterment of our
community and mankind. Their contributions include exemplary
service to our Club and its projects, valuable contributions
to the immediate community of Scarborough, and humanitarian
efforts internationally to assist individuals in acquiring
the basics of life. The Board of Directors, of the Rotary
Club of Scarborough 2008/09 is honored to present the
Paul Harris Fellow to an outstanding individual and
asked Shirley Zinman to come forward. Shirley went forward
to accept the award and seemed to be wordless!
Anne Taylor was then asked to come forward to receive
her second Paul Harris Fellow award. Anne said that
she gave the donation to Rotary International in memory
of her dear Anson.
Then, magically two Santa’s Mike and Sydney appeared.
We were told there was a great selection of gifts that
we could bid on and as the gifts were presented for
auction we could see that that was true. There were
all shapes and colours, bringing in anywhere from $15
to $25 each. Apparently we brought in $735 from the
auction of these gifts. We were directed to look at
the wrapping, check out the bows, wiggle and jiggle
and gurgle the gifts. Sometimes the gifts were heavy,
sometimes for the ladies. We were not allowed to escape
the beady eyes of the two Santa’s nor the collector
Mr. Don Hall. He always remembered who owed what.
It was a great evening. Audrey expressed thanks to us
for attending.
Our thanks are for Audrey and her committee in organizing
the event and ordering such a scrumptious buffet.
