Lauri Sue Robertson – Accessibility for People with Disabilities

Shirley Zinman introduced our guest speaker, Lauri Sue Robertson, President of Disability Awareness Consultants, who described her company as "teaching people who aren't disabled how to work with people who are".

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act required public service and public sector organizations to comply by Jan 1, 2010 and a longer phase in for private firms beginning in 2012. Implementation of the Act involves development of extensive policies, procedures and substantial investment to ensure disabled staff and customers can be accommodated through four principles of Independence, Dignity, Integration, and Equal Opportunity.

The Act has four major standards, each with its own requirements; not all have been enacted yet. These are Customer Service, Transportation, Employment, and Communications. Lauri reviewed in detail the Customer Service requirements of the Act which were included as part of a hand out before her presentation.

Lauri was ably thanked by Jim Foster, who gave her a token of our appreciation.

Ralph Waldo Emerson:

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

A little Humour Compliments of Gerard Baribeau

  1. A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."
  2. Two peanuts walk into a bar, and one was a salted. Meanwhile, a dyslexic man walked into a bra.
  3. A man walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt under his arm, and says: "A beer please, and one for
    the road."
  4. Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other: "Does this taste funny to you?"
  5. Two cows are standing next to each other in a field. Daisy says to Dolly, "I was artificially
inseminated this morning." "I don't believe you," says Dolly. "No bull!" exclaims Daisy.
  6. Déja Moo: The feeling that you've heard this bull before.
  7. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day, but I couldn't find any.
