March is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Month

Dear fellow Rotarians,

Rotary International’s focus for the month of March is Water, Sanitation & Hygiene.  The hygiene aspect was recently added to this area of focus.  As Rotary International acknowledges, we know that when adults and children have access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, they have the potential to lead healthier, more successful lives. There are many District Rotarians and Clubs who have been involved in projects that support this area of focus for a number of years.  What is your Club doing to advance this month’s focus?

If you are interested in initiating or participating in a project for this focus area, please contact: PDG Ron Denham, Chair Emeritus of WASRAG (the Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group); PDG Lars Henriksson, District 7070 Foundation Grants Training, Qualification and Application Information; or Ron Dick, Chair of our District Action & Partnership Committees.

A recent newcomer to this conversation is Rotarian Richard Brulotte from the Rotary Club of Cobourg.  He presented an excellent breakout session at the 2019 District Conference on the topic of ‘The Global Water Shortage and the Role of Rotary’.

World Water Day 2020 is March 22nd.  It’s an “annual UN observance that highlights the importance of freshwater.  The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.”  It is celebrated around the world with various events.  Visit for more information.

The Water and Sanitation Rotary Action Group will be leading a break out session at the RI Convention in Honolulu this June on the topic of “Learning from WASH Failures”.   If you are attending the 2020 RI Convention, consider attending this session.

There’s lots to learn about this month’s focus.  Just ask!  Get involved!

Yours in Rotary,

Beth Selby, District Governor 2019-20
