In his January 2023 Newsletter, District Governor Iosif Ciosa says thank you to each and everyone of us for making the first part of his Governor year such a success. Lots of things have been accomplished, and we all have lots more to do! The energy and enthusiasm is evident in all the clubs in our great district. He says that many of us feel the energy of a fresh start, new beginnings, renewed enthusiasm and the opportunity to think about the year ahead and asks us about our resolutions as a Rotarian, Rotaractor and Interactor. He also encourages our club leaders to renew inspiration for the rest of the Rotary year; and to think about the goals that they and their Club members set and strive to accomplish them. January is Vocational Service month and encourages is to focus on this important avenue of service. It is an opportunity to begin year-long vocational service activities, ranging from Rotary discussions to awards to community projects.........

In President Jennifer Jones' January 2023 Newsletter, she talks about the single most important factor in member satisfaction is the club experience - how at home you feel in your club, how rewarding club meetings are, and how engaged you feel in service projects. In her tour of clubs, she sees that when members feel an emotional connection to their club, they cannot imagine leaving. She says, "But there’s something else that makes an enormous difference in building and sustaining that connection. It’s the comfort and care of our members. ... We do this by taking time for each other, actively listening to one another, and treating every Rotary member as equally valuable — no matter how long we have been a member or what position we hold.". She concludes with an "ASK"... "I have one last request for club leaders. We still need to do more worldwide to increase our female membership. It’s up a bit this year, but I know we can and must do better. Rotary is growing again. As I write this, we’re just a handful of members away from surpassing 1.2 million Rotarians again. So let’s redouble our efforts to bolster our clubs with great new members, then keep them for life by providing comfort and care"..........

2023 Rotary Rose Parade Committee Float Theme: Entry number 75. Rotary: Serving with Imagination and Hope(Phoenix Decorating Company)
Last year the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee had a viewing audience of 41 million households in the United States and 28 million households around the world in more than 243 countries/ territories (2017 Tournament Statistics). The Tournament estimates that more than 700,000 are present live on the parade route, over 22,000 view the floats as they are decorated; and almost 122,000 view the post-parade floats. The Karantina Hospital in Beirut, severely damaged by the port explosion in August 2020, is pretty close to reopening next month, thanks to support from NGO's and Rotary Clubs throughout Canada and many other countries in the world. With the support from Rotary International, we were able to provide life saving equipment for the pediatric operating theatre along with beds, tables, lights etc. Yesterday, the green light was given for the operating theatre light. Soon young patients will arrive for free or low cost, life saving surgery. Thank You Rotary for all you do! Read more to see some of the photos.....

In 2022-23 we are staying with our Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) programming in the virtual format. Although we all appreciate that videoconference will never replace the personal connection that we get from meeting face-to-face, RLI is a very successful program with overwhelming response and enthusiasm from Rotarians across our District. Rotarians new to Rotary and even those with many years of service benefit from learning how we can create strong clubs with vibrant members who are engaged and committed to Service Above Self.

Rotary Zone 28 & 32 Finally, our Alaska "Life on Land" symposium has been postponed until August 31-September 2, 2023, at the Anchorage Sheraton and Spa, with 3 days pre and post-event opportunities.
The weather will be warmer, still plenty of daylight but also darkness for any northern lights. We will have great speakers on the Arctic and Environmental Sustainability, dinner in a home hosted by Rotarians, a special tour to see glaciers and wildlife, and the ability to match with a company for a one-way cruise from or to Alaska (some September deals are great!) or travel further north to meet up with local Rotarians in Fairbanks or Utqiagvik.

Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have renewed their longstanding partnership to end polio. The renewal agreement includes a joint commitment of up to $450 million to support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Rotary is committed to raising $50 million per year over three years, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars from the Gates Foundation. The joint commitment was announced in October in conjunction with the World Health Summit in Berlin, at which global leaders collectively pledged $2.6 billion in funding toward the GPEI’s 2022-26 strategy......

A New Weapon Against Polio - A modified vaccine offers hope that eradication is closer than ever - BY JASON KEYSER
In mid-2017, two groups of 15 strangers lived together for 28 days each in a ring of shipping containers assembled in the parking lot of Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. They had access to books and movies, a small courtyard for barbecues, a common kitchen and dining room, and a fitness room — all of it behind secure interlocking doors and under the watch of personnel in protective gowns.
What sounds like a reality TV or sci-fi scenario was, in fact, a remarkable clinical trial of the latest weapon in the battle to eradicate polio — a reengineered vaccine called the novel oral polio vaccine type 2, or nOPV2......
Rotary and our Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners have launched the Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026: Delivering on a Promise to overcome the remaining challenges to ending polio, including last year’s increase in polio cases caused by a pause in vaccination campaigns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders from Pakistan and Afghanistan — the last two countries where wild polio remains endemic — have recommitted to working with the GPEI to improve vaccination campaigns and reach at-risk children. As long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere.
In addition to providing a roadmap to eradication, the new strategy calls for renewed political and financial commitments from governments and donors to achieve a polio-free world. Learn more about the action underway to eradicate polio.
Past District Governor Mike Cooksey once told me that if you want more Rotary members, you have to ask. He told everyone he saw to "Get your Ask in Gear". His words certainly reflect one of the Strategic Plans that District 7070 has this year. Our goal is to receive 100 inquires from the "Join Us" or "Interested In Joining Us?" button on the District 7070 Website. Here is our challenge to your club: By the end of this Rotary year we want over 40 Rotary Clubs have a "Join Us" or "Interested In Joining Us?" button on their own club website AND have a "member conversion process" from these inquiries. It's up to you.
If you have been already been part of the District 7070 Website Refresh Program, then you will remember Melissa Wells talking about adding a "Join Us" button to the front page of your club website. This is your way of "asking" anyone who sees your website to learn more about Rotary and join your club.

Early in the new year, Rotary International sees a big increase in inquiries about joining Rotary. District and club leaders, remember to follow up with these prospective members to ensure that they have a positive experience. You can gain a better understanding of how to turn leads into members by taking the Online Membership Leads course. Use the Refer a new member form if you know someone who might be interested in joining. The updated form allows all Rotary members to refer a prospective member to their own club or to a different club.
Many clubs face challenges related to three things: attracting new members, keeping members engaged, and finding meaningful ways to contribute to their communities. Use the Club Planning Assistant to get tailored advice for addressing your club’s challenges. Club leaders, you’ll receive an instant response with links to the resources we recommend to help you address your club’s most pressing challenges. Rotary Action Groups help clubs and districts plan humanitarian service projects on various focused topics. The groups are organized by Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Rotary Peace Fellows with skills and interest in a particular field. Membership is open to people who want to share their expertise to make a positive impact or support action groups’ projects and activities. Action group members have the opportunity to engage in meaningful service activities outside their clubs, districts, or countries. Clubs can draw on these groups to enhance projects, engage members, and attract new ones......
Richard Mewhinney met with PDG Ron Dick, PDG Bob Wallace, and Prince Kumar to initiate a trial of a project board utilizing the Rotary Showcase as a platform. We need the help of every club in District 7070 to add projects to the Rotary Showcase. They will not only appear on the Project Database for the entre Rotary world to see (and perhaps help you with your project) but also act as part of our Rotary District 7070 Project Board. Log into MyRotary , go to the online tools and click Rotary Showcase. Rotary members and program participants are improving lives in communities around the world every day through thousands of service projects. Explore the good work that we’re doing locally and globally, and share these projects through social media.

A meeting with Violetta Piora at our Rotary District 7070 Conference in Oshawa, Ontario in May 2022, just after her session; has become a joint project extraordinaire! The Rotary Club of Scarborough, in conjunction with the Global Guardian Project of Durham College and the Rotary Global Classroom at Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario Canada are supporting orphans in Ukraine. This orphanage is located in a remote mountainous village and has over 93 young children in its’ care. The goal of this project is to help these students learn English and restart their education.......

At the Rotary District 7070 Conference in Oshawa in October , we saw the partnership with Durham College's Rotary Global Classroom and Sunnybrook Hospital, and Global Guardian working together to send Tactical Emergency Medical supplies to civilians on the front lines of Ukraine. They still need Canadian Rotary Clubs including those in District 7070, to help today. Thank you to the Rotary Clubs who have already donated and are saving lives. All donations will be included in their purchase of medical supplies from Sunnybrook hospital and taken to the Ukrainian war zone. Global Guardian is working on additional shipments of these medical kits that will arrive in a few months. Two engagements co-ordinated between District 7070 and the Williams Treaty First Nations communities in 2022:
The first one: Virtual teaching on nibi (water) with students was held on April 28, 2022 and was hosted with a panel of local Elders and Knowledge Keepers
The second one: Called "Aki-aadiziwin", it is a Reconciliation and Land Stewardship Program that aims to connect Indigenous and Non-Indigenous youth through meaningful engagement. Camp Kawartha in-person event on a date to be determined in 2023 with 25 Indigenous and 25 non-Indigenous youth. Youth will learn about treaties, Indigenous heritage and culinary experiences with Knowledge Keepers in the Williams Treaty Territories. Misko-Aki; Confluence of Cultures introduces a new and unique exhibition of Indigenous history and culture in Muskoka. Located at the Muskoka Steamship and Discovery Center in Gravenhurst, the exhibition (and a virtual version) will open in 2023. Visitors will experience the 10,000 year history of the Huron-Wendat, Anishinaabe, Metis and Mohawk people as the exhibition takes them on a canoe trip through the culture, history and geography of the region. This unique project highlights the authentic and previously unrecorded history of these four cultures in a fascinating presentation. The Covenant of Nations will bring together elders from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Anishinaabeg nation in a sacred renewal of Wampum Belt agreements that establish peaceful relations and resource sharing. These agreements cover the area surrounding the Great Lakes and were last renewed before the arrival of settlers. Rotary is being asked to support this initiative. The most engaging posts on social media are the ones that include images. That isn’t a statement, it’s a fact! Out of all of the social media networks, I have to say Instagram is my favorite. Why? Because photos equal fun! Although Facebook is currently the most popular social network, other platforms have been gaining ground, especially visual platforms like Instagram, which allows users to share photos after applying edits and digital filters. After uploading your photo, you can share it on your club’s social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. Instagram is awesome when it comes to showing your creativity and it has 300 million active users.
So why should your club be on Instagram? Because “a picture is worth a thousand words.” There are so many things you can do with photos to showcase your vibrant club and promote Rotary. Before your jump in:

In the Summer of 2020, we asked Rob MacArthur, our District 7070 Public Image Public Investigator to carry out an investigation on all 55 Rotary clubs with respect to their club's Public Image. Rob looked at your club's basic web site setup as well as social media channels and the way they were being used. A spreadsheet of the results was made available for our District Leadership Team and Assistant Governors to look at in the Fall of 2020. In the aftermath of the EF2 tornado that caused devastation and hardship in Uxbridge on May 21, 2022, the Township of Uxbridge asked The Rotary Club of Uxbridge Charitable Foundation to become the central vehicle to receive and disburse monetary donations to assist those affected. “Rotary is a trusted partner in our community, and well-equipped to assist. We knew they would be ready to help in any way they could. They didn’t disappoint.” said Mayor Dave Barton. “This wasn’t an easy task, and we are grateful to Rotary for stepping up to help the Community in a time of need”........
On December 15, 2022, the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood donated $4,000 towards Durham College’s “Building for Skills” Campaign, shining a spotlight on skilled trades training, innovation and education. The presentation took place at the Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology (CSTT) building which is now fully operational, with reconfiguration underway of space vacated in the Main Building, at the Durham College south campus. Honouring all vocations and generously partnering with Durham College to help fund the expansion with transformative support, the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood is pleased to add to the support and gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations and hopes that they can do even more in the years to come.....
On June 24, 2022, at Oshawa Ontario Canada City Hall, with Mayor Dan Carter, members of Oshawa City Council, Rotary District 7070 Governor Ron Dick, Rotary Club Presidents Peter Hernandez & David Penny, and members of the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood celebrated the Rotary 4 Way Test Plaque NOW on display at the entrance to the City of Oshawa Council Chambers. This is Vocation Service in Action - reminding everyone entering the City Hall Chamber , how to conduct their business with the City, fully endorsed by Oshawa City Council. This is a project for you and your club to promote in your city........
The Fifth Annual Concert to Feed the Need in Durham on SATURDAY DECEMBER 10, 2022, that featured musicians from across the Durham Region at The BILTMORE THEATRE in Oshawa, was another huge success, thanks to Joe Solway form the Rotary Club of Bowmanville and the other 9 Rotary Clubs in Durham Region. Proceeds went to help feed their neighbours in the fifth annual Concert to Feed the Need in Durham. As in past years, the event showcased an award-winning line-up of performers from a cross-section of genres – pop, country, R&B, gospel, folk, classical and more.
The event’s scope has grown over the years, becoming a Durham-wide Rotary event, with the Rotary clubs in Durham Region joining as co-presenters. Over $30,000 will go to Feed the Need in Durham – and the need has never been greater. The agency collects and distributes food and other essential items to more than 60 emergency food providers across Durham, including food banks, shelters, meal and snack programs and other social service agencies. COVID has thrown a wrench in many Clubs’ plans. As we are returning step by step to a more normal life, it may be time to also look at the plans for the future for our Clubs. Club Visioning offers a process to develop an Action Plan for the Club. Each member of the Club is invited to participate, and the session can be either on-line or in person. Interested?
