In view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each year, special effort is required to provide club leaders with appropriate instruction for the tasks they will assume. The annual district assembly is the major leadership training event in each Rotary district of the world. The workshops offer motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of each club. Some of the most experienced district leaders conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and service projects. The sessions give all participants valuable new ideas to make their club more effective and interesting.
Normally eight to ten delegates from each club (officers, directors, committee chairs, and all interested Rotarians both experienced and new to Rotary, etc.) are invited to attend the training session.

Posted by Joseph Hall, Feature Writer, Toronto Star
We hope that you had a chance to read the extensive article, written by Toronto Star feature writer, Joseph Hall, on global polio eradication efforts published in the Toronto Star this week. Joseph Hall gives great exposure (and thanks) to Rotary for leading the efforts.
In Afghanistan, frontline health workers explain to parents why the polio vaccine must be delivered multiple times. Afghanistan is one of the last areas in the world where wild poliovirus still circulates, and has the highest number of children paralyzed by the virus. In 2017, there were altogether 14 cases and so far in 2018, there have been three confirmed cases.
To answer to the challenge, the polio eradication initiative has stepped up efforts to detect any viruses in the environment. The programme is taking special steps in the eastern and southern regions to reach all children with the vaccine every time the vaccinators pass by, as these are very high risk areas for polio transmission, with people moving in and out of neighbouring Pakistan. Special outreach tactics are concurrently aiming to reach and immunize ‘mobile populations’, such as nomadic people, who are at high risk of contracting polio.
The polio surveillance system is finding the virus in the most challenging areas so that children can be protected and polio stopped for good. The poliovirus remains in just a few small pockets around the world. However, these final hiding places are some of the most challenging settings on earth in which to eradicate a disease.
Finding and stopping a virus whose special power is staying hidden is no mean feat, especially in remote or inaccessible places. Disease detectives around the world are working tirelessly to find every last virus in these hard to reach places. Some areas are vast and sparsely populated, such as the broad plains and river beds making up areas of the Lake Chad region. Others are densely packed residential areas of Afghanistan, where security issues can sometimes make immunization difficult. In areas of Syria, civil war continues to rage through towns, communities, and families. Yet these challenges are not enough to stop the surveillance system.

Engaging Younger Professionals, a new online toolkit, will help your club answer these questions. The toolkit will help you rethink membership, from a broad perspective down to a tactical level. It contains features like videos, testimonials, graphics, and publications that support a younger, more diverse membership. Explore the toolkit and discover how you can get to know your audience, enhance your club’s culture, and engage emerging leaders.
It did for the Rotary club of Hundred Islands, Pangasinan, Philippines. When Fely R De Leon became president of the club, she had an ambitious goal of reaching 100 members. What Is your Rotary Club doing to focus on Water and Sanitation in March 2017? Clean water and sanitation is a human right. When people, especially children, have access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene, they lead healthier and more successful lives. We don’t just build wells and walk away. Rotary members integrate water, sanitation, and hygiene into education projects. When children learn about disease transmission and practice good hygiene, they miss less school. And they can take those lessons home to their families, expanding our impact.
