The annual dinner celebrating the leadership of District 7070 and beyond met on May 30th at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club. A terrific evening with great fellowship. We are just weeks away from the pinnacle of the Rotary year, the International Convention, and it’s being held in our city, Toronto. The International Convention serves as a networking platform to meet friends from around the world and to establish new international contacts. The event will be attended by Rotarians and various guests from approximately 180 countries and regions worldwide. The overall objective of the Convention is to enable participants who are linked by shared values to collaborate on service projects for making the world a better place. Just before the Convention is a unique occasion: the Presidential Peacebuilding Summit will be held with the mandate of increasing awareness about Rotary’s role in fostering world peace and creating action steps to further its continued development. The Wilf Wilkinson Peace Award was inaugurated following Wilf’s year as President of Rotary International. It was commissioned to honour him for his specific efforts in supporting the fourth object of Rotary, namely the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace. Past winners include the late Jack Layton, War Child, and The Canadian Centre for Refugee and Immigrant Health Care. The Doctor Bob Scott Disease Prevention Award was inaugurated following Bob’s retirement as Chair of Rotary’s Polio Eradication program. It was commissioned to honour him for his significant leadership in efforts to reach The Rotary Foundation’s primary goal, namely the eradication of polio from the face of the earth. The most recent winner of this award is Past District Governor Ron Denham for his contributions to water and sanitation initiatives around the globe. Clubs interested in applying for District Grants for projects they plan to do in the 2018-19 Rotary year HAS BEEN EXTENDED . You need to complete your applications no later than JUNE 15, 2018. Applications should have be made on a special form, available on the District’s website (www.rotary7070.org). District Grants can be used for both local and international projects. Projects can be of various size, but most are in the $3,000 -15,000 range. To encourage cooperation between Clubs, the funding formula will give more funds to projects with several participating Clubs. Ten Rotary Clubs of Durham Region receive Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation to help with the renovation and expansion of the Kids Safety Village
Representatives from the 10 Rotary Clubs in Durham Region (Oshawa, Oshawa-Parkwood, Whitby, Whitby-Sunrise, Ajax, Pickering, Port Perry, Uxbridge, Bowmanville, and Courtice) were at the Kids Safety Village of Durham Region on May 8, 2018, to receive a matching grant ($7,200) from Lars Henriksson, Chair of the Rotary District 7070 Grants Committee of the Rotary Foundation. Looking to participate in a great service activity whilst at the convention? Our District is holding a massiveKids Against Hungerfood packing event. These have been successful all across our district, and many Interact Clubs have held them in their schools. Slots are available Monday and Tuesday during the convention.
Are you an avid cyclist? Heck - do you own a bike? Or borrow one. If so, there are two cycling trips to held eradicate polio. One for leisure cyclists, another experienced. Registration also includes a swanky Destination Eradication bike shirt!

The House of Friendship committee is offering the six sponsor Rotary districts the opportunity to showcase their Rotary and Rotaract clubs’ accomplishments on the big screen in the House of Friendship at the Rotary International Convention. It is with regret I pass on the news that the Interact Precon originally scheduled for June 21st has been cancelled. There are a variety of factors, but the main one was extremely low registration, partly due to the timing - which conflicted with most high school students here in Ontario. For those who were interested in bringing youth to participate - remember the entire convention is only $10 for them! (Parental consent is required during the registration process.)
Thousands of convention registrants completed an interest survey in January to help determine the breakout program. Knowing what interests you helps us finalize details for over 90 sessions on member engagement, projects, and more. They expect 5,000 delegates to sign up.

Rotary Clubs, like any other organizations, need to have a plan for where they are heading. In order to assist Clubs to develop a vision, the District has a team of experienced Rotarians who can facilitate visioning sessions. Since we started the program, five or six years ago, close to 40 Cubs have held sessions. A few Clubs have held two or three sessions, up-dating their vision on a regular basis. Does your club need vision?
Rotarian Action Groups help Rotary clubs and districts plan and carry out community development and humanitarian service projects in their areas of expertise. Join a "RAG" or contact a Rotary Action Group today.
