Chair of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation Ian Riseley's October 2022 Newsletter

In the Chair of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation (and Rotary International Past President)  Ian Riseley's  October 2022 Newsletter, he talks about End Polio Now and World Polio Day. He says that what Rotary and its partners have achieved is nothing short of remarkable (reducing polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide, immunizing more than 2 billion children across 122 countries). Last year alone, more than 370 million children were vaccinated across 30 countries, using more than 1 billion doses of oral polio vaccine. He aks us to remember that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat to people everywhere, especially to young children. You may have heard about importations of the disease to Malawi and Mozambique, detection of poliovirus in sewage in the UK, and a recent case in the U.S.. Ian urges every member to take action and be part of this historic fight. Take the fight to your clubs and communities on World Polio Day, 24 October. Keep raising awareness of the importance of polio eradication and Rotary’s critical role in that effort by holding events and fundraisers. Don’t forget that contributions toward the goal of $50 million per year for polio eradication will be matched 2-to-1 by our generous partner, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. ".............

Rotary Statement on Recent Polio Detections in USA & Europe

The recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in New York, USA, and isolates in several environmental samples collected in London are stark reminders that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere. It also highlights the importance of vaccination as the only form of protection against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases and the work that needs to be done in our communities to encourage the uptake of vaccines. Also, as the world gets closer to zero wild poliovirus cases, it is increasingly important to track all forms of the virus wherever they may appear, including in polio-free regions......

A New Weapon Against Polio

A New Weapon Against Polio - A modified vaccine offers hope that eradication is closer than ever - BY JASON KEYSER

In mid-2017, two groups of 15 strangers lived together for 28 days each in a ring of shipping containers assembled in the parking lot of Antwerp University Hospital in Belgium. They had access to books and movies, a small courtyard for barbecues, a common kitchen and dining room, and a fitness room — all of it behind secure interlocking doors and under the watch of personnel in protective gowns.

What sounds like a reality TV or sci-fi scenario was, in fact, a remarkable clinical trial of the latest weapon in the battle to eradicate polio — a reengineered vaccine called the novel oral polio vaccine type 2, or nOPV2......

Rotary's Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-26 - "Delivering On A Promise" to overcome the remaining challenges to ending polio

Rotary and our Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) partners have launched the Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026: Delivering on a Promise to overcome the remaining challenges to ending polio, including last year’s increase in polio cases caused by a pause in vaccination campaigns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders from Pakistan and Afghanistan — the last two countries where wild polio remains endemic — have recommitted to working with the GPEI to improve vaccination campaigns and reach at-risk children. As long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere.

In addition to providing a roadmap to eradication, the new strategy calls for renewed political and financial commitments from governments and donors to achieve a polio-free world. Learn more about the action underway to eradicate polio.

Creating a Successful & Agile Rotary Club

Your District 7070 Membership Committee is ready to work with you!

In 1921, at a Rotary convention in Edinburgh, Scotland; Paul Harris said: “The motive power of Rotary is friendship.”

Recently, in an annual survey of Rotary members, 45% cited friendship as the reason they remain in Rotary and 84% said they were satisfied with their ability to connect with new friends through Rotary. Another 42% cited the opportunity to make an impact on their communities as the reason they stayed in Rotary.

On a local level, how can clubs and districts use this information to attract and engage new and current members?

Your District Membership Committee can work with you to help you build a successful and agile club.

Rules of Engagement - 6 Tips for nurturing the purpose and passion that power Rotary

In a January address to incoming district governors before the International Assembly, Jennifer Jones, then RI’s president-elect, told the story of a 30-year Rotarian who fully understood what Rotary was all about only after participating in a project that delivered coats to children in his community. "Imagine," said Jones, "more than 1,500 club meetings before he finally got Rotary." The fault, suggested Jones, wasn’t entirely his. "We must engage our members," she insisted. Ask members what they want out of the experience and provide them meaningful responsibilities. "It’s our offer of hands-on service, personal growth, leadership development, and lifelong friendships that create purpose and passion. These are our responsibilities. If we don’t serve our members, we don’t serve our communities. And if we don’t provide comfort and care for our members, they may never truly get the power of Rotary."

With Jones’ remarks in mind, we checked in with three clubs to learn the secrets of their success. Turns out, the key is exactly what Jones prescribed: Pay attention to the comfort and care of members. Here are six tips on how to do that.....

Be sure to Add the "JOIN US" Button on to your Club Website ? Please do it TODAY - It Really Works

Past District Governor Mike Cooksey once told me that if you want more Rotary members, you have to ask. He told everyone he saw to "Get your Ask in Gear". His words certainly reflect one of the Strategic Plans that District 7070 has this year. Our goal is to receive 100 inquires from  the "Join Us" button on the District 7070 Website and to have over 40 Rotary Clubs have a "Join Us" button on their own club website AND have a members conversion process from these inquiries.  It's up to you.

If you have been already been part of the District 7070 Website Refresh Program, then you will remember Melissa Wells talking about adding a "Join Us" button to the front page of your club website.  This is your way of "asking" anyone who sees your website to learn more about Rotary and join your club.

Past District Governor Bob Wallace of our District 7070 Technology Team did this to our District Website. Instead of "Join Us" , Bob put an "Interested in Joining Us" button right up front on the menu tab. To see how we have done , Please Read more........

Let's Support Basic Education and Literacy  All Year Round

Although September is Basic Education & Literacy Month, let's support this important Area of Focus ed throughout the year as we build awareness and support the different aspects of solving the challenges of literacy for all.

October, too, is also the perfect time for your club to become aware of the education needs in your community or to learn about projects around the world where Rotarians are making a difference through education and literacy projects.

In the recent addition of the Rotary Magazine (September), we learned of the literacy project in Guatemala – the gift of reading.

What can your club do?

The Basic Education and Literacy Committee of D7070 is ready to help Rotary and Rotaract clubs in District 7070.

Remember too, it is important to keep us informed of projects you are doing. Clubs can and should work together, especially, on larger projects.

Rotary Clubs, like most other organizations, will benefit from having a plan for the next couple of years.  What are your goals?  What do you want your Club to be like - two or three years down the road?

Strategic planning consists more or less of these three steps.

  • A description of where you are now, the Club’s status.

  • As a group, you and your club members decide what and where you want to be in two, three years.
