The Honourable Julian Fantino

The Honourable Julian Fantino is Canada’s Minister of International Cooperation, primarily responsible for the work done by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Prior to his current portfolio Minister Fantino was Canada’s Associate Minister of National Defence, responsible for military procurement, and Minister of State for Seniors. Mr. Fantino was first elected to the House of Commons in November 2010 and was re-elected in May 2011.

Prior to his election to Parliament, Mr. Fantino served for almost 40 years in law enforcement, including as Chief of the London Police Service, York Regional Police and Toronto Police Service. He served as Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police and as Ontario's Commissioner of Emergency Management. He was also Past-President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, and Vice-President-at-Large of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Mr. Fantino is active in local and international victim rights groups, including as an honorary member of Canadian Crime Victim Foundation. He is involved in community organizations, including programs to make organized sports accessible to disadvantaged children; supports the Hospice Vaughan; and volunteers at a number of seniors’ long-term care facilities in Vaughan.

Mr. Fantino was born in Italy and immigrated to Canada when he was 11 years old. He and his wife, Liviana, have two children and four grandchildren.
