Past District Governor Beth Selby and the District Governor Team hosted the annual District Govern Changeover Ceremony and Awards Presentations for more than 100 Rotarians and Rotaractors and their spouses from all over District 7070, on June 30, 2020 ONLINE, as Past District Governor Beth Selby recognized many clubs, Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors for their outstanding contributions to Rotary during this year.......

2019-20 District Govenror Beth Selby, recognized many clubs, Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors for their outstanding contributions to Rotary during his year as District Governor. Congratulations to all of the recipients . 

DISTRICT ROTARY AWARDS:

Doug Dempsey Literacy Award - to the Rotary Club of Scarborough

The District 7070 Rotary Club or individual Rotarian that exhibits the best examples of project(s) designed to promote domestic and/or international literacy. 

 

Norm Simpson Award for International Service - to RC Whitby Sunrise

This trophy is awarded annually to the club in the district that made the most outstanding contribution to the International Service of Rotary during the preceding Rotary year. 

 

Tibor Gregor Community Service Award - to Rotaract Club of GTA Connect & RC Markham Sunrise

This award is given to the club with the best Community Service project during the year. 

 

The Rotary Foundation Trophy Certificate - to RCs Colborne, Alliston & Cobourg

This is awarded to the three clubs that have the highest per capita contribution to The Rotary Foundation Programs for the previous Rotary year ending June 30th.  Each in one of the following three categories: clubs with less than 25 members, clubs with 25-30 members, and clubs with more than 50 members.

 

The Devon & Linda Biddle Annual Fund Certificate - to the RCs Agincourt, Scarborough & Cobourg   

This award is given to the three clubs that have the highest per capita contribution to The Rotary Foundation Annual Fund Program for the previous Rotary year ending June 30th.  Each in one of the following three categories: clubs with less than 25 members, clubs with 25-30 members, and clubs with more than 50 members.

 

The Bill & Delphine Patchett Polio Plus Certificate - to the RCs Colborne, Oshawa-Parkwood & Belleville

This award is given to the three clubs that have the highest per capita contribution to The Rotary Foundation Polio Plus Fund Program for the previous Rotary year ending June 30th. Each in one of the following three categories: clubs with less than 25 members, clubs with 25-30 members, and clubs with more than 50 members.   

 

Austin Bodie Singing Award- to the RC Cobourg 

This awarded to the club with the best record for singing.  Judging is by the District Governor on his or her visits to the clubs.

 

Oddy Robson Memorial Award - to the RCs Bowmanville, Oshawa & Oshawa-Parkwood

This presented to the club that contributes most to inter-club fellowship. 

 

Basil Tippet  Award - to the RCs Markham Sunrise & Toronto East.

This awarded to the club with the highest member retention ratio based on clubs’ membership at the beginning of the Rotary year. 

 

Wally Large Memorial Award - to the RC Northumberland Sunrise 

This awarded to the club with the highest percentage increase of membership growth for the past twelve month period. 

 

Ed Storie District Conference Award - to the RCs Colborne, Campbellford, and Toronto & Whitby Sunrise

This award is awarded annually to the three clubs that have the best percentage attendance at the District Conference – small clubs, medium-sized clubs, and large clubs.  The home club of the District Governor will be excluded from consideration for this award.

 

Internal Communications Award - to the Rotaract Club of GTA Connect

This award covers communication within or between clubs and is open to all clubs by application.  The application should include samples of internet sites, club bulletins, coverage in Rotary News or samples of Rotary education campaigns.

 

External Public Relations Award - to the RCs Oshawa & Oshawa-Parkwood

This award honours clubs that have generated increased awareness and understanding of Rotary through media coverage or public relations efforts. Livestreaming their 3 hour event and Rotary International's event to the world from Durham College's Global Classroom.

 

Club Bulletin Award - to the RC Toronto

This is awarded by the District Governor.

 

Youth Services Award – to the RC Etobicoke

This award recognizes a club that has provided outstanding service to youth over an extended period.  All segments of Youth Services qualify for consideration including EarlyAct, Interact, Rotaract, Youth Exchange, RYLA, community or international service focused on youth.

 

Les Faludy Leadership Award -  to Shelley Hagerman & Trevor Hagerman, RC Stirling

This award is made to the Club President who, in the judgment of the District Governor, provided the most outstanding leadership during the preceding Rotary year. 

 

Council of Past District Governors Award - to Ron Dick, RC Oshawa

This is awarded annually to the Rotarian of the District who had made the greatest service contribution during the preceding year.

 

Bob Scott Disease Prevention Award - to Steve Rutledge, RC Whitby Sunrise

This award is made to a Rotarian, Rotary Club or Friend of Rotary who, in the judgment of the District Governor, made a significant contribution to disease prevention and treatment in Rotary District 7070 and beyond. Steve's  Adopt A Village LAOS project , supported by many clubs in District 7070. Barry Mount of the Whitby-Sunrise Rotary Club congratulated Steve on  job well done. Steve's Rotarian volunteers from Vancouver were also on the Zoome meeting congratulating Stev. Congratulations came in from Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell and MPP Lorne Coe. Barry's company HMA Benefits donated $1,000 to this year's recipient to go towards the charity of their choice, which we just might guess might be Adopt A Village Laos. Congratulations Steve.

 

PATTI WRIGHT - CHAIR DISTRICT 7070 YOUTH SERVICES COMMITTEE:

 Patti thanked her committee (Rotaract - Reema Gowani and Shauna Moore; Interact - Laura Bradford, RYLA - Weiting Bollu  and PDG Neil Phillips, and Youth Exchange Deb Murray and Jason Pole)  for their outstanding work this year, all in the midst of the pandemic. She reached out to all of the Rotary Clubs and said , "we are at your call" .

Weiting talked about an outstanding RYLA in 2019 with 30 participants. COVID-19 came and cancelled 2020 but 20201 is in progress set tentatively for April 30 thru May 5, 2021. 

Deb Murray talked about the COVID-19 pandemic and the safe return of 8 inbound and 8 outbound exchange students . Due to the pandemic, Deb announced that the 2020-21 exhcange program is cancelled but they are working on 2021-22. Thank you to the entire committee and the host families for making this year for the students.

Laura Bradford talked about the 19 Interact Clubs and hopefully more will be added in the fall when school get back on the ground.

Reema Gowani talked briefly about the 12 Rotaract Clubs and thanked the District Governor Team of Shauna, Beth and Mark for their assistance throughout the year. 

 

DISTRICT 7070 INTERACT AWARDS: conducted by District 7070 Interact Chair Laura Bradford

DISTRICT INSPIRATIONAL AWARD – Charlie Kamra, Interact Club of Aurora

Charlie was the only remaining member of the Newmarket Club in September. He inspired his peers at his high school in Aurora and grew a new Club to 28 members in 3 months. Under Charlie’s leadership as President, the Club walked in Santa Claus Parade, did a food bank drive over the December school break, a children’s craft activity at Winterfest and prepared dinner for guests at Inn from the Cold.

 

DISTRICT LEADERSHIP AWARD – Pearl Bawa, President, Interact Etobicoke Collegiate Inst.

Pearl Bawa is a Grade 11 student at Etobicoke Collegiate High School in Etobicoke. She became involved with Interact in grade 9 and took over the Presidency this year in grade 11 and will continue as President next year. The Interact experience, together with other leadership experiences, have brought a new confidence to Pearl.  Her enthusiasm for helping others and to improving the Interact Club with over 40 members is both inspiring and contagious. 

 

DISTRICT OUTSTANDING INTERACT CLUBS AWARD – Interact Club of Aurora

First year for this Club. Started with one member in September and has grown to 28 members. Club walked in Santa Claus Parade, did a food bank drive over the December school break, children’s craft activity at Winterfest and prepared dinner for guests at Inn from the Cold. Covid has slowed plans for a clean-up day and second food drive. 

 

DISTRICT SOCIAL AWARD – Interact Club of Richview Collegiate Institute

The Richview Club submitted a video to the Rotary International video competition and made it to the finals.

 

DISTRICT OUTSTANDING PROJECT AWARD – Interact of Etobicoke Collegiate Institute

The interact Club of ECI has been sponsoring a lady in Khulna, Bangladesh, named Renu Begum on the promise that she will teach others what she learns including to her children and the children in her community to break the cycle of poverty. The Club has been sponsoring Renu Begum for the last 5 years via the Amarok Society and through fundraising initiatives and hosting letter writing campaigns. Renu educated her neighbors son who is the first in his family to complete grade 7.   This project elevates a women’s position in the home and advances gender equality

 

DISTRICT ROTARACT AWARDS: conducted by District Rotaract Representative Reema Gowani

Master Advertiser Award: This award recognizes one amazing Rotaractor who went above and beyond to recruit new members and promote club events. They know the Rotary and Rotaract elevator pitch so well that they say it in their sleep!
