WAKAM is the acronym for Western Alliance of Kenya Against Malaria, and is the first Global Grant of RAM-Global (Rotarians Against Malaria-Global Rotary Action Group). The Grant strengthens the local health systems ability to prevent and respond to malaria by educating and equipping Community Health Promoters (CHPs). For malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment, CHPs are the Malaria warriors and are the boots-on-the-ground managing malaria one village at a time. The grant's implementation is collaborative initiative between Busia, Siaya, Bungoma and Kakamega County Ministries of Health and the NMCP (National Malaria Control Program), RAM-Global (Rotarians Against Malaria-Global Rotary Action Group), 4 district work groups (as below) and 4 Rotary clubs in Western Kenya. WAKAM, the Western Alliance in Kenya Against Malaria is a high impact and successfully executed project in Kenya this past year. The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood is a sponsor and a WAKAM work group member. Other members of the work group form District 7070 are the Rotary Clubs of Belleville and Cobourg. WAKAM2 , the second Global grant, is now in the process of being submitted for the scaling of the original grant through to October 2028. Pledges are now needed from District 7070 clubs.

The international club project lead is Dr. Daniel Perlman MD a retired infectious disease and public health specialist. He is a Carbondale Colorado Rotarian and chair of Rotarians Against Malaria --Global Rotary Action Group.
Background:
1. WAKAM was established three years ago. It was a $300,000 grant, which was awarded to four clubs in Kenya. (see: https://www.ram-global.
The original project concludes in October 2026. It has been remarkably successful, and the Kenya Ministry of Health has now adopted the 2026-2030 plan to eradicate malaria in Kenya.
The Ministry of Health partners and provides support for our on-the-ground initiatives, including the provision of bednets, training and equipping of Community Health Workers, vaccines, spatial repellents, and education.
2. WAKAM2 is being submitted for the scaling of the original grant until October 2028. At that time, the Ministry of Health will assume responsibility for the activities outlined above. This new grant will train 250 new Community Health Promoters in adjacent areas to the original grant. The grant amount is $400,000.
