Rotary Leadership Institute

NETWORK, LEARN, BE INSPIRED.

Rotary Learning and Information:

In a complex  fast-changing world, excellent Rotary club leadership is essential to the future of Rotary.

The future of Rotary and the service we give to our community locally and internationally depends on strong club leadership.

What Is The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI)?

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses enabling Rotarians to refine their knowledge of Rotary. Courses are fun, topical, hands-on, and geared toward busy business professionals who want to be more effective knowledgeable leaders in their vocation, Rotary club, and voluntary organizations. Participants return to their club with enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and valuable leadership skills.

Why should your club participate in RLI?

Rotary provides an opportunity for all of us to provide service to our community and around the world. RLI has a mission to strengthen Rotary clubs through quality leadership education.

Rotarians new to Rotary and even those with many years of service will benefit from learning how we can create strong clubs with vibrant members who are engaged and committed to Service Above Self.  Now more than ever, the world needs Rotarians to create a more peaceful and equitable world for all.

Through the RLI, your key people can gain knowledge through exchanging ideas with experienced Rotarians.

Feedback from past participants tells us that the courses are worthwhile.

“The entire program was excellent. Being a new member, I was very impressed with what Rotary is all about.”

“Lots of valuable information. A must for all new Rotarians.”

“Enjoyed hearing about successes of other Clubs. Really appreciated the interactive nature of the presentations!”

"Loved the classes and feel that every new Rotarian should take these!!”

"Thank you for supporting this program.  It is a vital piece to further understand Rotary and how each of us can make a difference.”

“Excellent courses. I have come away charged up… I will also do everything possible to encourage our members to attend RLI. I am a convert to Zoom!”

"I thoroughly enjoyed the online presentation of the complete sessions.  It was convenient… The combination of the formats – presentations and group discussion – was effective and welcoming. This was excellent!  Thank you for allowing me to participate!"

What is in it for you?

  • Learn from others and share ideas that you can embrace
  • Challenge your thinking, encourage yourself to think laterally, and try new experiences
  • Explore how being a Rotarian is an opportunity for personal growth and fulfillment
  • Discover fresh ideas, new tools, new contacts, and an increased motivation to take action which you can take back to your club

As Rotarians, you are already leaders in your community, in your profession, and in life. At RLI, our purpose is to give you the necessary skills to be better Rotarians. As in every endeavour, the more you know, the more interesting it becomes and the more you get out of it.

Leadership skills in a voluntary organization are often different from business and professional leadership skills. It is important that club leaders have every opportunity for education because the success or failure of our clubs depends on the quality of our leaders.

For newer Rotarians, RLI is an outstanding opportunity for you to improve your Rotary knowledge. For experienced Rotarians, this is an opportunity to “refresh” and update your Rotary knowledge and to share your experience with newer Rotarians. You are guaranteed to bring back to your club new ideas and approaches that will make your club stronger. Just the interaction with other Rotarians from other clubs makes the courses valuable.

Course Format and Content

The RLI is offered in three parts (Part I, II, and III), which must be completed sequentially. The courses are designed to empower participants with Rotary knowledge and enrich their leadership skills.

The Rotary Leadership Institute is fun, interactive, and participatory. We follow an adult learning approach with facilitated discussion led by trained Rotary facilitators to make the experience valuable and enjoyable.

Courses cover topics such as:

  • Leadership characteristics/skills/strategies
  • Rotary organization beyond the club level
  • Membership recruitment/retention
  • Our Rotary Foundation
  • How to organize a service project
  • Team building/effective committees
  • Ethics/vocational service
  • Strategic Planning and Analysis of your own club
  • Public Image and Public relations

The faculty members are carefully selected by the Institute for their teaching and facilitation abilities. Most are Past District Governors or RLI graduates. Each Faculty member attends a full day training program.

District 7070 Rotarians are eligible to take RLI courses anywhere they wish. Check the Shining Waters Division (www.rli-shiningwaters.org) for course dates and locations.

The History and Mission of the RLI

The RLI is a grassroots coalition of Rotary districts implementing a leadership development program for "potential" leaders of Rotary Clubs. Established in 1992, the RLI has become a worldwide organization.

District 7070 is a founding member of the Shining Waters Division of RLI, which currently includes D6330, D7080 and D7090 and D7010.

We believe that excellent club leadership (of all types of club leaders) is essential to the future of Rotary in a complex and fast-changing world. Most Rotarians have not been exposed to the great scope of Rotary around the world and have not considered what leadership skills are necessary to move Rotary forward.

The RLI also strongly believes that a good Rotary Club leader must know the evolution of Rotary, its current status, and activities in the world and have a vision for what Rotary can be in the future.

Our mission is to have the clubs in the member districts identify those with the potential for future club leadership and send them to RLI courses at club expense. All member clubs may send any club Rotarian to RLI courses and any Rotarian may attend any course at their own initiative.

The overriding goal of the courses for club Rotarians is to create ENTHUSIASM for Rotary by revealing the world of Rotary outside of their own clubs and showing them the great potential of Rotary service to benefit the world, both of which can be furthered with excellent leadership in our clubs.

Established in 1992, the RLI series was created for newer Rotarians to learn about Rotary. Because Rotary changes its leadership every year, there is a constant need for Rotarians to accept leadership positions in their clubs and beyond. RLI has spread around the world, being offered by more than 160 districts.
