Richard Mewhinney recently met with the President of the Adjumani Rotary Club while he was in Uganda and he advised, the small irrigation project that Richard and the Rotary Club of Newmarket were able to assist them in completing last year, as their first community project after they received their Charter. I have spoken to my contact from the Pagirinya Refugee Settlement who has advised everything is still working and has verified the success experienced.

The Chase Hunger Project

Completed

Basic

The project led by Rotary Club of Adjumani addresses food insecurity & lifts community resilience.

Overview

Detailed description

The Chase Hunger Project by the Rotary Club of Adjumani aims to combat food insecurity in Pagirinya Refugee Settlement by delivering six basic irrigation kits to vulnerable communities. This initiative, funded by Diamond Ministries and supported by the Rotary Club of New Market, District 7070, came at a critical time when prolonged drought and reduced UNHCR food rations threatened refugee livelihoods. The project focuses on ensuring food access, restoring livelihoods, and promoting climate-smart agriculture. Through sustainable irrigation, communities can enhance food production, reduce dependence on aid, and build resilience against future crises, fostering self-reliance.

Community Needs, Project Impact and Sustainability
Community Assessment: How the project team learned about the community’s needs
The community need for the Chase Hunger Project was identified through direct engagement with Pagirinya Refugee Settlement residents and local leaders, revealing severe food insecurity due to prolonged drought and UNHCR food ration reductions. Farmers struggled with poor harvests, threatening livelihoods. Assessments highlighted a critical lack of irrigation infrastructure, limiting food production. Reports from humanitarian agencies and local organizations confirmed the urgency of intervention. Recognizing the need for sustainable food solutions, the Rotary Club of Adjumani, in collaboration with partners, prioritized providing basic irrigation kits, ensuring long-term food security and resilience-building.
Project Impact: How the project will help the community after the project ends
The Chase Hunger Project has significantly improved food security in Pagirinya Refugee Settlement in the short period by enabling sustainable farming through six irrigation kits. This is expected to improve over time as vulnerable farmers can now grow crops year-round, reducing dependence on food aid. Households will have increased food availability, improved nutrition, and gain opportunities for income generation. The project has strengthened community resilience, allowing refugees to recover livelihoods lost due to drought and food shortages. By promoting climate-smart agriculture, the initiative fosters self-reliance and sustainability, ensuring long-term benefits for refugees and host communities in Adjumani District.
Sustainability: How the benefits of the project will continue afterward
The six-step sustainability plan ensures the long-term success of the Chase Hunger Project in Pagirinya Refugee Settlement: (1) Community Ownership – Farmers are trained to operate and maintain irrigation kits independently. (2) Capacity Building – Regular training in climate-smart agriculture enhances productivity. (3) Partnership Strengthening – Collaboration with Rotary, NGOs, and local authorities ensures continued support. (4) Income Generation – Beneficiaries sell surplus produce, funding future agricultural inputs. (5) Expansion & Replication – More communities adopt the model, increasing food security. (6) Monitoring & Evaluation – Regular assessments track impact and guide improvements, ensuring lasting food resilience.
